In my opinion, a lawn mower such as a line trimmer is one of the very simple and ingenious inventions, capable of turning your weed-filled garden in a matter of minutes personal plot into a well-kept lawn. But no matter how thoughtful the invention is, it needs care and repair. I am not a supporter of alterations of industrial tools, but in order to save money, I came up with and am describing a useful addition to the line trimmer.

The first thing that was covered in it was the button, when I took it apart, there were obvious signs of melting, I think this was caused by power surges in the network and the processes occurring at the time of switching. To put it simply, it was of poor quality. Like many other parts of the trimmer, the button can be replaced with another one that is suitable in terms of parameters (current and design). The line for the trimmer, well, like other attachments, is a consumable material, and it is quite natural that I ran out of it too. Like a typical Kulibin, I started putting everything I could get my hands on there, starting from an ordinary thick fishing line and ending with a thicker and more durable special line for a trimmer. Despite my natural curiosity and inquisitiveness, I acted within the framework of the instructions I had read, but even this did not save my reel from destruction.

It seems that the reel (meaning the part itself where the fishing line is wound) did not suffer much during the process of my experiments, but the special grooves holding the fishing line were simply ground off, which is not surprising because they are plastic, and I have been using the trimmer for a long time and quite often. Of course, even for older models of trimmers, spare parts are sold, ranging from fishing line to engines. But the new reel seemed a little expensive to me, the price was, frankly speaking, “biting”, and I was not happy with the fact that it was impossible to thread 5mm thick fishing line into it (my trimmer is designed to use 2mm thick fishing line).

And so... after much thought on the topic of how to modify the trimmer coil, an idea that was easy to implement and quite easy to use came to mind. It is necessary to cut a circle from a strong material, I used foil PCB 4mm thick.

You need to make a hole in the center of the disk with a diameter suitable for the axis of the rotating shaft, and four more holes (or more) suitable in diameter for your fishing line.

The idea is very simple, you do not use a reel, do not wind the fishing line, but simply tie it to the holes and attach the disk to the holder according to the same principle as the previous reel, it is only important to find a suitable spring - for secure fastening (anyone who has a trimmer will immediately understand what kind of spring are we talking about).

You don’t have to tie the fishing line, despite the high speeds, it somehow holds on quite firmly and doesn’t fly out. With the proposed organization of directing the fishing line into the trimmer, you benefit from the fact that you can attach fishing line of any diameter and configuration there, and you will never need to spend money on new reels. But there are also disadvantages: you will need to cut pieces of fishing line of a certain length, this may not always be convenient. But in terms of time and labor intensity, threading a fishing line is no worse or worse than using the classic method into your original reel.

Option 2 - ends that are too short protrude from the head. The line may not come out when it hits the ground if its ends protruding from the head are not long enough (short). Therefore, you need to stop the unit (turn off the engine or unplug the electric trimmer) and pull out the line manually, after pressing the button.

Option 3 - the line is soldered inside the mowing head. This causes the reel to lock and not spin when the button is pressed. 2. But, if you nevertheless purchased a fishing line of unknown quality, and it often gets soldered during operation, then you can follow the example of some users who, after threading the cord into the reel, wet it either silicone grease(from a can) or mineral oil. This procedure greatly reduces the likelihood of soldering turns of fishing line together.
3. Also, the fishing line can become soldered if, during mowing, it hits a hard object (stone, fence, dry branch, etc.). As a result of this, it stretches a little and is pulled back into the head at high speed. The cord heats up due to friction, and its turns stick together. The only thing that can be done to eliminate this malfunction is to open the trimmer coil and rewind the line.

The cord spontaneously elongates

There are situations when the trimmer user notices very fast line consumption. At the same time, he never hit the button on the ground to lengthen the fishing line. The reason that the fishing line spontaneously lengthens, being cut off by a special knife on the casing of the device, may be lack of spring in the mowing head. Often, novice users of mowers, trying to load fishing line into the reel, forget to install the pressure spring in the head, or completely lose it when opening the lid, and in the future, do not even suspect its existence.

Is it possible to make a coil for a trimmer with your own hands?

There are a large number of trimmer heads (non-automatic) on sale, which have a low price and good quality. But sometimes situations arise, for example, at the dacha, when the trimmer reel is broken and repair is impossible, the store is far away, and you need to mow. In this case, you can quickly, literally in a few minutes, make a simple trimmer attachment for securing a fishing line from regular plywood 10-12 mm thick.

1. Take a piece of plywood or PCB and draw a circle on it with a diameter of about 14 cm.
2. Cut out the disc using a jigsaw or hacksaw.
3. Drill a hole in the center of the disk that matches the diameter of the gearbox shaft. Do not forget to put a washer on it before installing the disk on the shaft.
4. You can screw small corners along the edges of the disk or make 1-2 holes on opposite sides. They will serve to thread fishing line into them.
5. To secure the fishing line, you can screw several screws into the plywood.
