DIY wooden carport. Wooden carport: how to build a shelter for your car

Not every car owner has the opportunity to build their own garage to protect the vehicle from environmental influences. A cheap and practical replacement for a garage would be to build a carport. The design protects equipment well from hail, snow and exposure to sunlight. Below we will look at the pros and cons of a carport and find out how to make it from polycarbonate with your own hands.

The optimal material for making a carport is considered to be monolithic cellular polycarbonate. The following qualities help him become a leader:

  1. Buildings using polycarbonate have an aesthetic appearance.
  2. Low cost.
  3. Protects against the damaging effects of ultraviolet radiation.
  4. Durable and durable.
  5. Available in various color shades, which allows you to harmoniously fit the canopy into the surrounding landscape.
  6. Does not burn.
  7. Thanks to high flexibility used to build structures of increased complexity.
  8. Easy to install.
  9. There is no need to monitor the condition of the material.
  • Polycarbonate sheets are matte or transparent, which allows you to adjust the level of illumination under the canopy.

Varieties and design drawings

To date, a large number of drawings have been developed that allow you to build a polycarbonate canopy, both open and closed type, for a private home or cottage. Among the most popular designs are:

Each design has its own pros and cons, which we will consider in more detail.

Single-pitch

A simple structure, the construction of which does not require specific construction skills. Advantages of a polycarbonate lean-to canopy:

  • This is an economical option;
  • easy and quick to build;
  • stands up well to bad weather, especially strong gusts of wind;
  • the height and width of the canopy do not affect the strength and speed of construction of the structure.

When building a structure, consider the following nuances:

  • roof inclination angle – from 35 o to 45 o;
  • to protect the polycarbonate sheet from damage, the sheathing of the structure should consist of squares, the size of which ranges from 40 to 50 centimeters;
  • The best material for lathing is metal. It is possible to use wood;
  • The optimal color of polycarbonate is blue, bronze or green.

Note! In regions where the wind is strong and gusty, the roof slope is made flatter and the angle of inclination is 25 degrees.

Gable

The construction scheme for a gable canopy made of polycarbonate is more difficult to implement than that of a single-pitch model. However, due to the complexity of the design, an arched gable canopy has greater strength. The advantages of this option:

  • due to the greater strength of the structure, the risk of breakage due to strong winds is minimized;
  • snow accumulating on the roof is removed faster and easier;
  • protects the car from bad weather and sunlight with greater efficiency.

The gable design is good not only for protecting the vehicle from bad weather. Such canopies are well suited for:

  • protection of recreational areas;
  • installations above the porch of a private house or cottage;
  • covering the area between two buildings.

Mobile option

Due to its lightness and flexibility, as well as its pliability during processing, polycarbonate is excellent for use in prefabricated shelters and awnings. It provides not only reliable protection, but also good transportability of the shelter.

Judge for yourself, a polycarbonate sheet is 8-10 times lighter than a glass sheet of the same size. Wood and metal are not worth mentioning at all. There are a large number of drawings on the Internet that allow you to assemble mobile canopies of varying complexity and configuration. All you have to do is enter your query into the search bar.

For one car

Erection of a carport for one car does not cause any problems, and a covering area of 3 meters wide and 4 meters long is sufficient for its construction. There are no special requirements regarding the type of construction. It can be either single or double slope.

To save materials, builders advise building a parking space next to the wall of the building. This will help protect it from rain and wind on one side and will save money on the construction of additional support posts.

For two cars

The size of a polycarbonate shelter for two cars and its configuration are calculated based on the following considerations:

  1. A polycarbonate shelter with a width of 5 meters and a length of 6 meters is suitable for a family that has two small vehicles.
  2. If large vehicles, for example, SUVs, it is advisable to expand the shelter area and make it 6 by 6 meters.
  3. An area of 7 by 11 meters is allocated for guest canopies.

Note! When installing a shelter for a car adjacent to the wall of a building, the angle of inclination of the roof should be from 12 to 14 degrees. This will preserve the integrity of the building in winter, when snow from the roof of the building falls onto the roof of the polycarbonate canopy.

Step-by-step guide to building a structure

Constructing any structure with your own hands requires careful preparation and adherence to the basic stages of construction. Constructions different types have differences in the construction algorithm, but there are general principles, characteristic of all buildings. So, during construction, the mandatory steps will be:

  • purchase building materials in the right quantity;
  • erection of support pillars that serve to support the roof and ensure the stability of the shelter;
  • installation of polycarbonate sheets.

Preparation of materials

Before constructing any structure, care should be taken to prepare materials so that installation work passed quickly, without unnecessary delays. Materials you will need:

  • polycarbonate sheet with a thickness of 6 to 8 millimeters;
  • metal corners for constructing a roof frame and shelter support pillars;
  • fasteners for fixing polycarbonate to the finished metal structure.

Hardest tool to get welding machine, which will be needed in cases where the pillars and roof frame are made by hand.

Construction of pillars

In order to make the canopy strong and stable, you need to install the correct number of support posts. As an example, let's take a canopy whose dimensions are 3 meters wide and 6 meters long:

  • for its construction you will need 8 metal pillars;
  • 4 pieces are installed on each side;
  • the diameter of one table is 90 millimeters;
  • the height of the canopy should be 3 meters, respectively, the length of the pipes should be 3.5 meters.

The pillars are installed in holes 0.5 meters deep and filled with concrete. Two poles installed in this way can cope with loads of up to 250 kilograms.

Installation of polycarbonate sheets

The final stage of arranging the canopy is the installation of polycarbonate. This process is carried out as follows:

  • sheets are adjusted to fit required sizes on the ground, after which they cover the frame of the building;
  • fastening is carried out using self-tapping screws and stainless steel bolts;
  • the joints of two sheets are fixed using a special aluminum profile;
  • The ends of the sheet are sealed with sealant to prevent moisture from entering the polycarbonate.

Note! Cellular polycarbonate is secured using special washers.

How to lay out a platform under a canopy

The following options are used as coating materials:

  • laying paving slabs;
  • pouring a concrete base;
  • crushed stone;
  • lawn lattice.

Polycarbonate does not require special care, but if certain rules are followed, its service life will increase significantly:

  1. Wipe carports with a soft sponge and a small amount of detergent.
  2. If cracks appear on the roof of the car shelter, seal them with sealant.
  3. Don't forget to rinse thoroughly detergent plenty of water.
  4. The polycarbonate surface covered with a protective film must not be treated with agents such as solvents.

If you follow these rules, your canopy will last a long time and be durable.

In the old days, when a traveler returned home, the first thing he did was bring his horse into the stall, and only then he went up to the house. Nowadays horses are made of iron and do not ask for oats, but they also require protection from hail and dampness. And it’s not at all necessary to build a major garage for your car. At the dacha there is a fairly wide, reliable canopy that you can build with your own hands from available materials: wood, cellular polycarbonate and profile pipe. This is an interesting task for skilled hands, and to make the work go smoothly, we have attached photos and detailed drawings to the article.

Why you shouldn't leave your car outdoors

Even rocks are destroyed under the influence of the environment, and even more so complex equipment. Of course, the car will not become unusable in a week, but day after day its lifespan will be shortened by the following factors:

  • raindrops will sooner or later flow into places where they can start rusting;
  • hail will inevitably leave dents on the roof and hood;

The canopy will reliably protect the car from precipitation
  • dust will clog all the cracks, for example, in the grooves for glass, in the frames of mirrors and headlights, which will affect the appearance of the car;
  • the summer sun will burn out the paint on the seat upholstery and things left in the cabin, worsening physical properties tires

A country canopy for a car provides shading and good ventilation, the absence of leaves and bird blots on the windshield.

Build it for your pet: it’s simple, functional and reliable.

Advice. Place the canopy in a place where water does not stagnate - and you will be satisfied with the condition of the rubber.

Canopy materials

Structurally, the canopy consists of two parts: a frame and a roof, and the most important part of the work is the construction of a reliable frame. You should think carefully about the choice of material for the base of the future canopy, since replacing it will be more difficult than the roof. There are three options to choose from.

The roof of a canopy is usually made of either profiled sheets or cellular polycarbonate. In the second case, the canopy will look more aesthetically pleasing and airy, but in areas where there is a high probability of large hail, it is advisable to immediately purchase a more expensive type of polycarbonate with a special protective film.

Advice. If you replace the polycarbonate with a durable awning and put it away for the winter, then the eternal problem: how to find time to come to the dacha to remove snow will be solved by itself.

Site preparation

If you do everything wisely, then you should start by organizing a place not above the car, but under it. Having chosen a site convenient for entry, you need to cut off all the turf, remove the soil to a depth of 12-15 cm and make a cushion of sand and crushed stone using a compactor. Along the way, you can build a slight slope, and if the area is low-lying, then drainage pipes around the perimeter. After the canopy is ready, any parking covering can be laid on this pad.

It is recommended to install a reinforced concrete screed under a heavy SUV. To do this, build a plank formwork, fill it with concrete to the middle, lay down a reinforcing mesh and add concrete. For such a site to completely harden, it will take at least a month.

There are plans for a carport - where to start?

Any construction work requires drawings. Place the car in the designated place and carefully measure the length and width of the future canopy. Mark the locations of the supports, check whether they will interfere with parking and opening doors. Please note that the roof can extend beyond the perimeter of the supports by 0.5-1 m.

Draw all this on paper in side and top projections and calculate the required amount of material. Add about 10% so you don’t have to take time off from work and go buy more.

In addition to a steel pipe (or a wooden beam - whichever was chosen for the frame), you will need concrete to fill the base of the supports, and the following tools:

  • saw, hammer, nails (for working with timber);
  • grinder and welding machine (for working with pipes);
  • level and plumb;
  • pegs and twine (any long rope, cord);
  • shovel;
  • clamps;
  • self-tapping screws with a press washer;
  • screwdriver

Building a canopy - step-by-step instructions

When working, be sure to use a level and plumb line, carefully measure and check all lines. The sequence of operations during the construction of the frame is as follows.

Attention! If you have a pipe bender and want to get a beautiful semicircular roof, keep in mind that corrugated sheeting will not work in this case, only polycarbonate.

How to lay out the floor under a canopy

What the wheels of the car will rest on depends on your preferences and the general style of the cottage. The options may be as follows:

  • grass (seeded or rolled lawn);
  • gravel chips;
  • paving slabs;
  • clinker brick;
  • asphalt.

Another great option– eco-parking. These are either special tiles with a hole in the center, or a hard plastic grid. The tiles are laid on a sand cushion using a rubber hammer, the seams and holes are covered with sand or a mixture of sand and soil, and lawn grass is sown. You don’t have to sow - the wind will spread the seeds.

Parking space made of paving slabs

The soil under the grating is usually prepared in this way: sand and gravel cushion, geotextiles, 2-3 cm of sand. Lay out the lattice modules, fasten them, add soil and sow with a lawn mixture, usually bluegrass, fescue and bentgrass. The advantages of eco-parking are that instead of a gravel or concrete patch in your yard, you will get another section of lawn, but there will be no car ruts on it.

Construction of a canopy on summer cottage will pay off even if you don’t have a car. You can put motorcycles, bicycles, boats, kayaks, wheelbarrows and just garden tools under it.

Making a carport from polycarbonate with your own hands, photo examples

A carport is a simple, reliable and practical way to protect your iron horse from precipitation, “surprises” of birds, sunlight, and leaves. At the moment, there are many options for how to make a carport, they differ in size, shape, and material of manufacture.

In the article we will talk about the technical features of the construction, discuss the advantages and disadvantages of various designs, which materials are better to choose. We will also offer drawings and step by step instructions How to build a carport with your own hands.

Design overview

A canopy is essentially a simple, small architectural form consisting of vertical supports, a roof and a platform. Since the building is located near the house, its style should be combined with the overall ensemble or fit harmoniously into the landscape of the site.

Carport Materials - Supporting Structure

It is possible to make a carport with your own hands from almost any materials; their choice depends on your capabilities and budget for construction. Let's look at the most popular projects:

  • A carport made of wood, it can be laminated or profiled timber, logs, trunks. Wooden structures are very easy to manufacture, do not require special tools, but are fire hazardous and require careful treatment with antiseptics and fire-resistant mixtures.
  • Metal carports are perhaps the most popular type of construction. The frame is made of pipes, welded from a metal profile, or it is a beautiful forged product. The construction of a metal canopy requires special welded equipment and skills to work on it, or the involvement of specialists. The construction is strong, reliable, durable, the only negative is corrosion, so metal parts must be protected from dampness.

  • Built on stone, concrete, or brick pillars, carports are more massive compared to previous options, but do not require additional processing and are easier to operate.

Important: Fire retardants are products of groups 1 and 2 according to GOST 16363/NPB 251, which must have a certificate and a certificate of sanitary and epidemiological inspection. For critical, load-bearing elements, only compositions of the highest group can be used; according to the visual inspection nomenclature, the transparent mixture is pink.

Types of roofing and materials

A carport with a pitched roof is the easiest way to arrange a comfortable parking space. Here it is important to correctly make the mauerlat - the strapping along the upper heads of the pillars and the rafter system, which must withstand wind loads and snow pressure on the roof. If there is less than 4500mm between the support pillars, you can do without additional supports, if more, then you will have to make additional supports. For a carport, the minimum roof slope is 25°, but the final slope depends on the choice of roofing material.

Good to know: With a roof slope of 25°, 300 mm of height is added for every meter in length, so if the carport is 5 m, then the rear pillars should be higher than the front ones by: 5 * 300 = 1500 mm.

Less often, sheds are equipped with a gable or hip roof; these are large and complex buildings designed for multifunctionality, for example, the first floor is for a car, and the second is a gazebo.

Types of roofing materials for a single-pitched rafter system:

  • profiled sheet;
  • roofing felt;
  • soft tiles;
  • metal tiles;
  • ondulin;
  • slate;
  • polycarbonate;
  • awning

Under the curved, arched roof, a polycarbonate carport is installed. This is usually a metal arc-shaped structure welded under a truss made of profile pipes or forged product. Here it is important to calculate the strength and design of the load-bearing elements. Canopies made of polycarbonate can be considered universal, they look light, are almost invisible on the site, and therefore fit into any architectural composition.

Mobile carports

Nowadays you can buy compact, folding carports. I imagine a metal frame with a tent roof. The assembly diagram is simple; the structure can be installed with the efforts of 1-2 people in 1-2 hours.

You can install a carport in your country house with your own hands in 2-4 hours

This option is convenient for summer cottages and outdoor trips. The kit may include side walls made of soft glass or an awning.

A mobile carport for a car in the country; if necessary, you can always roll it up or move it to another place

Area

The area for a carport can simply be covered with crushed stone, but more zealous owners arrange concrete slab, paved with natural stone or paving slabs. To prevent the site from collapsing, it is necessary to prepare the site: remove the top fertile layer of soil, fill the bottom of the pit with sand and crushed stone, and compact it. Don't forget about the slope and drainage so that water does not stagnate on the site.

Good to know: To more reliably protect the car, it is recommended to equip the canopy with additional side walls.

It is better to make the platform at ground level; if it is higher, do not forget to provide a descent

Features of accommodation

A carport can be a free-standing structure attached to a house, outbuilding, garage, or adjacent to a fence. The choice of location depends on the conditions on your site. It is better if the structure is supported on independent supports, but if necessary, one of the sides can be made of a cantilever type.

Building a carport with your own hands - an example of how to attach the structure to a house

Which canopy is better?

Each type of material has its own advantages and disadvantages. Thus, wood is susceptible to rotting and burns, metal rusts, special welding equipment is required, and these materials require constant maintenance. Building from brick and stone is troublesome; you will need skills in masonry, effort to mix concrete, and the time costs are greater than equipping a wooden and metal canopy.

Forged products bring luxury and elegance to your home

Here the choice depends on your capabilities; it’s easiest to build from wood, but if you’re good at working with metal, then it’s likely that welding the frame will be much more convenient for you.

Corrugated sheeting – does not fade, does not require painting, does not peel off

As for roofing materials, of course, it is faster and easier to use rigid sheet format: polycarbonate, corrugated sheets, slate. Roofing felt will cost much less, but installation will require sheathing of rafters, just like for soft tiles. The most appropriate option is corrugated sheeting and polycarbonate, which is called “not expensive and cheerful,” but if you compare them, corrugated sheeting is susceptible to corrosion over time, but polycarbonate does not have such disadvantages. Plus, it allows light to pass through, so the space will not be darkened if the canopy is attached to the house.

A huge color palette makes polycarbonate a universal material for roofing small architectural forms

Technical side of the issue

Support posts for wooden carports are made from timber 150*150, 100*100 mm, or rounded logs with a radius of 150-200 mm. For metal structures, a round one is suitable. steel pipe with a diameter of 100 mm or profiled with an edge of 80*80 mm. The distance between supporting structures is 1.5-2.0 m; in some cases, three-meter spans are allowed, but such options require complex engineering calculations.

Carports made of polycarbonate, photo project of parking for 2 cars

For purlins - profiled pipe 40*80 mm, for large carports - 80*80 mm, for mauerlat 100*100 mm or 150*150 mm, for metal sheathing - pipe 40*40 mm, for a rafter system made of wood - edged board 100*40 mm.

Carport made of wood, photo of a drawing with parking dimensions for one car

Dimensions

The ergonomic size of the canopy for an average car is 5 * 2.3 m, the dimensions of the building are considered universal - 6.6 * 3.6 m, suitable for minibuses, SUVs, crossovers. To make the carport for 2 cars convenient, but at the same time not take up additional space on the site, it is optimal to choose a size of 6.3 * 5.9 m.

Carports made of polycarbonate, cantilever design in the photo

The height of the canopy directly depends on the height of the car plus the upper trunk with things. Too low will be inconvenient when getting out of the car, so it is advisable to make the height 1.9 - 2.2 m; if you make the building higher, precipitation will fall on the site.

Construction of a carport with your own hands, drawings of a parking lot adjacent to the gate

According to standards, the dimensions of the carport should be 1 m more car in length and 1-2 m in width. The width of a carport for two cars is calculated as follows: the sum of the widths of two cars + 1 m on each outer side + 0.8 m between cars.

How to build a polycarbonate carport with your own hands

We will build a simple metal structure with a pitched roof and a polycarbonate roof.

Project with dimensions and materials for making the structure

We choose a place, fence it around the perimeter with posts according to the drawing, and stretch the rope. We remove the soft layer of soil and dig a pit approximately 300 mm deep. On the sides, every 1.5 - 2 m, we dig holes for support pillars, 700-100 mm deep, depending on the height of the groundwater and the nature of the soil.

We level the bottom, lay sand and crushed stone, a layer of 100 mm, compact it so that there are no traces of a person of average weight. We install the formwork, knit a reinforcing frame for the slab, only corrugated rods 8-12 mm, cell 100*100, 200*200 mm. We reinforce the pillars separately. To do this, pour 200 mm of concrete at the bottom of the pit, and insert reinforcement into it; the frames can be made in advance, tie the rods in the form of pillars and wrap them with roofing felt in 2 layers.

Good to know: You can not pour a columnar foundation separately, but immediately concrete the load-bearing posts into the ground: a metal pipe or beam, but this option is less practical, since the material in the ground will collapse even with a protective layer.

We pour concrete, a thickness of 100 mm is sufficient for a slab, and wait for the concrete to set. Since the base will not be loaded, after a week you can begin the main work.

Using corners and brackets to columnar foundation we attach metal support posts with a diameter of 50-100 mm, check the vertical plumb line, install slopes to maintain the geometry. We check the height of the pillars and cut them if necessary to maintain the slope of the roof.

Ways to secure vertical support posts

We make the strapping along the upper heads and weld it to the base with a 40*40 mm metal profile. Next, we attach additional strapping perpendicular to the posts, thus obtaining a right triangle for the truss. Using rolled products of a smaller cross-section, we weld the stiffeners of the rafter system. We lay the rafters from a square metal profile perpendicularly, every 800-1200 mm, the canopy over the edge of the trim is 200-300 mm, and we weld it. We clean all parts with a stiff metal brush and wash with solvent. After drying, prime and paint.

An option for a simple rafter system that is easy to make with your own hands

Tip: Choose fasteners made of galvanized steel, this will avoid corrosion and subsequent destruction of materials.

We lay a polycarbonate sheet on the rafter system; it is better to use cellular rather than cast, it is more resistant to mechanical damage. Convenient sheet thickness is 6-12 mm, the color depends on the rest of the design of the site.

We attach the polycarbonate to special press nuts to avoid water leakage every 300-400 mm. We close the edges with end strips.

How to properly attach polycarbonate to the rafter system

In this design, polycarbonate can be easily replaced with corrugated sheets; material with a thickness of 0.5 mm is suitable.

How to properly attach a corrugated sheet

If necessary, such a structure can be sheathed on the sides with a wooden lattice or curtains made of awning, tarpaulin, or soft glass can be hung.

Country house carport: material, location, manufacturing

Almost no modern yard is complete without a convenient garage or shed. A simple structure serves as reliable protection from atmospheric agents and protects your car from the sun, early rotting and corrosion. Would you like to make a carport for your car? In fact, such a design does not require a lot of money and effort. It is quite possible to do it yourself. Let's figure out how to build a simple garage or functional shed that will reliably protect your car. We will also find out what materials can be used for such construction.

A well-planned design of the yard area will allow you to create an entire plantation for relaxation on a private plot

Introduction: carports, features and nuances

Let's first figure out why it is better to make a carport for the country house. First of all, when there is no cover over the machine, raindrops can penetrate into the body, which will eventually cause rust. In addition, hail can leave dents in the surface of the car, and dust can get into all the cracks. At the same time, the sun's rays can burn the upholstery on the seats.

The hanging structure can stand to the side or be adjacent to some objects. Powerful supports guarantee reliable fastenings

The country canopy is quite light, but it is quite enough to cover a car that is not constantly in the country. The structure for the car can be built very quickly. In this case, the building can be made from a profile pipe, from ondulin or from boards, and simpler options are made from fabric.

A simple fabric design provides protection from the sun's rays and provides protection in rainy weather.

You can also purchase a ready-made version from the manufacturer, for example, folding or prefabricated. You can make options from affordable materials. You can see what different carports look like in the photo.

A prefabricated building can be assembled from individual purchased elements

If you decide to build such a structure for a car yourself, then you need to know about the following features:

  • Before starting work, you need to complete preparatory work, including designs and drawings. In this case, it is necessary to take into account the volume of material required, as well as permissible loads, dimensions, cost and location;

Option drawing for a two-seat design
  • after drawing up an approximate estimate, you need to purchase necessary materials. Also consider the consumption of additional materials that may be needed;
  • It is important to decide where the structure will stand. And also, what its height should be depending on the dimensions of the car. Preparatory work include preparation of the base and leveling of the site. In this case, it is necessary to take into account the slope of the territory, subsidence and occurrence of groundwater;
Approximate dimensions of the structure
  • The most difficult stage is the construction of the structure. The frame installation, construction and covering are carried out.

Welding frame elements

Can be done beautiful canopy with a gate. Also, such a device can be one part of a utility unit or complement a barn. You can build a cantilever version of the structure, but for a simple structure you can use a regular shed.

The shelter attached to the utility block is very convenient

Location of carport on a summer cottage

Before starting any construction work you need to think about a place for a canopy. From the selected area you need to remove the turf to a depth of 12-15 cm, and then build a cushion of crushed stone and sand. In this case, you can build a slight slope, as well as drainage structures around the perimeter. Then you need to lay any parking covering on the pad. If the machine is too heavy, you can install a reinforced concrete screed.

Durable stone covering

Depending on the method of location on the site, the structures can be autonomous, and can also be used as an extension to a garage, bathhouse or utility block. Also popular are the galleries that connect the house and the gate.

Individual devices stand on metal or wooden supports. If the structure is adjacent to another building, then it may have the following support options:

  • beam-supported, when one side is supported on a beam, and the other on supports;
  • cantilever-supported - fastening is carried out using brackets or corners;
  • the console version is recommended for small structures.

Console device option

Carport in front of garage

Now let's look at the options for garage canopies and the features of their construction. The most common option is when the canopy is placed in front of the garage door. It can be made for one or two cars. A similar structure can be built between the garage and the house. In the photo you can see the most popular ideas. Sometimes a combination of a garage and a carport is used.

Design option in front of the garage

When deciding how to make a lightweight canopy, you can place it on the side of the main structure. For the construction of the roof, materials such as metal profiles, pipes, and wooden beam. The roof can be made of polycarbonate, corrugated sheets or metal tiles. Part of the canopy can also be placed over the garage. Similar designs can be of the following types:

  • open ones have a common wall with the garage;

This is what an open structure looks like
  • closed ones have three walls. In this case, cladding is performed using wood, awning fabrics or lining. If necessary, the canopy can be covered.

Closed shelter

In addition, such buildings can be collapsible or stationary. Often a garage with a canopy is built under a gable roof; this option is recommended for a wooden frame. If the structure is arched, then you can use a metal frame with supports.

Garage or shed - which is better: the answer to this question depends on financial resources, the purpose of the structure and the materials used. The most convenient solution is a combined option.

Carports attached to the house: photo

An extension near the house is popular because adjacent structures are easier to install. You can also use a simpler mount. Before deciding how to build such a canopy and how to attach it to the wall, you need to understand the materials.

The frame for construction near the house is often made of wooden beams or metal pipes. Also, structures next to the house are made of brick or stone, and are also filled with cement supports.

Design option near the house

The design of a canopy in front of the house requires the presence of strong supports that can withstand the weight of snow falling from the main roof of the house. You can see how to make beautiful designs in the photo.

Any such structure consists of a roof and a frame. Special attention worth paying attention to the foundation. You can choose the following material:

  • The wood is easy to process and does not require any complex tools. But this material requires special care. Over time, the tree becomes covered with fungus, rots and cracks. It must be protected with special impregnations;

Spacious and durable wooden canopy
  • The steel profile pipe is installed using a welding unit. Such material can last a long time;

Steel elements
  • the combined option involves the use of cladding a steel frame with wooden slats.

Combined construction

For the roof, a more aesthetic solution is to use cellular polycarbonate, or you can also use a profiled sheet.

Features of carports for 2 cars

Using carports, you can build practical structures for two cars. When choosing a specific design for two cars, you need to choose the right dimensions. The photo shows the most best options such buildings. You can combine this design with a utility unit. The spacious structure for two cars has dimensions of 8 by 6. The standard width should be at least 2.5 meters.

Gable structure for two cars

How to cover a carport

When choosing a canopy, you should focus on the general architectural style other buildings. It is important to decide on the materials. The important point is the covering. The choice of material also depends on the type of roof. The following options are often used:

  • the single-pitch option is the easiest to install. It is recommended for the construction of free-standing buildings;

Shed roof
  • gable structures are also used for autonomous structures and tent buildings;

The gable roof is excellent at getting rid of precipitation.
  • Arched roofs are used for attached and separate sheds.

An arched canopy not only protects the surface well from precipitation, but also serves as a decorative element when decorating a yard area.

For the construction of structures with gable roof or with a pitched roof, materials such as metal tiles, slate, corrugated sheets, ondulin or polycarbonate are used. To make arched structures, rolled metal and polycarbonate are used.

The simplest option is a pitched roof. In this case, the slope of the slope is approximately 25 degrees. Rigid sheet material is excellent for pitched structures.

Polycarbonate carports

Polycarbonate can be used to build durable structures for two cars or one. This material has many advantages, for example, affordable prices. Polycarbonate can be placed over any carport. Wherein simple designs you can easily do it yourself at the dacha.

Polycarbonate is an excellent material for creating any hanging structures. In this case, it is used to cover a large area of the yard area

When deciding how to make a structure, it is necessary to take into account the material of the frame, and the thickness of the polycarbonate is also important. In the photo you can see what similar structures made of this material look like for 2 cars or for one.

Polycarbonate is placed on the frame structure and secured using special fasteners. Using this material, you can build a garage with a carport.

Carport made of corrugated sheets

A carport made from corrugated sheets is one of the most popular. This coating can be easily done with your own hands. In addition, this design is lightweight. It can be firmly fixed to the frame, which will ensure its stability in strong gusts of wind.

This material can also be used as an awning cover. You can see what a canopy made of corrugated sheets looks like in the photo.

Corrugated sheeting is a fairly popular material for creating shelters.

Before work you need to make at least the simplest drawings. Installation is quite simple. Regardless of the design option, corrugated sheets must be laid from bottom to top. First, the first part is attached, and its edge is screwed with self-tapping screws. You can also use clamps with a rubber gasket. After this, another overlapping sheet is installed. Two more self-tapping screws are screwed at the joints.

Drawing for an arched structure

Carport made of metal tiles

In the photo you can see options made of metal tiles. With drawings at hand, you can make simple designs with your own hands. If the roof for the main building is made of such material, then you can make an attached canopy under one roof. In this case, you can make a completely closed structure for installing a car.

If a shed roof is used for an autonomous canopy, then the walls can be placed on a solid foundation made of tiles, cement or concrete. Often different manufacturers offer turnkey designs. The price depends on the size of the building and the materials used.

Metal tiles allow you to create an original design

Carport frame materials

When erecting a canopy, it is important to choose the right material for frame system. The option chosen will depend on whether the structure is stand-alone or has a house or gazebo attached to it.

Wooden canopies

Wooden canopy It is quickly built and can be built with your own hands. A timber structure can last for many years if it is treated with special protective compounds. A wood frame for a car can be covered with polycarbonate, slate, tiles or ondulin.

Wood can be used to create powerful supporting elements

Budget materials for the dacha include wooden blocks. They are characterized by a long service life. In order for the material to last for many years, it should be treated with antiseptic drugs.

A canopy on a wooden frame has the following advantages compared to metal structures:

  • environmental friendliness and safety of the material;
  • low weight of the structure;
  • ease of processing and installation;
  • low cost.

Wooden cantilever building

When deciding how to make a cover for cars, you need to take into account that they can be stationary. Also, a project for a summer house may look like an extension to a house. Exist different ways, how to install wooden posts. To increase their stability, the supports need to be additionally concreted. A lean-to canopy can be used as an addition to an existing building. Installation similar designs requires certain drawings. One edge of the structure rests on the wall of the building, and the second on the racks.

Autonomous structures for cars are supported by four racks. The photo shows different options for such designs. If you plan to install several machines, then the number of supporting elements increases.

Drawing for a pitched roof

When constructing wooden structures, some rules will help you:

  • The construction of supports must be made from rounded logs or profiled timber. To build a rafter system, you will need small diameter bars;
  • roofing material must be selected taking into account the slope of the slope and the structure of the rafter structure. Polycarbonate is recommended for decking of various configurations. Corrugated sheeting can be used for single-pitch gable roofs. Soft tiles require a continuous sheathing;
  • the coating must have a certain slope of 5-10 degrees.

Construction from timber

As a rule, canopies attached to a building are made along the entire length of the adjacent wall. The average height of a wooden structure should be about 2-2.5 meters.

Metal carport

You can make a functional and reliable metal canopy with your own hands. Most often, a channel, a corner, as well as a regular or profile pipe are used for shelter. Installation can be done from lightweight materials on which an awning or ondulin is laid. For capital frame systems, you can use euro slate or metal tiles.

You can look at the photos for beautiful ideas for your dacha. Metal elements are quite reliable and can last for many years. You can also use ready-made solutions, for example, dismountable or prefabricated. They most often come in standard sizes.

To build metal structures yourself, you need drawings. Installation can be made from metal corners, channels and pipes.

Forged structures are also popular. Such buildings are expensive, and their construction requires specialists. To make a high-quality design, you need to take into account the dimensions of the machine, the installation of the frame system and coating materials. By combining all these characteristics, you can build a high-quality building.

Compact metal design

DIY carport

How to build a quality shed depends on many factors. First you need to outline the perimeter of the future site. In order for the extension under the car to be strong, you need to pour a foundation for the supports and concrete the pillars. You can build a carport at your dacha with your own hands on a pile-screw foundation or on a strip foundation. To build a foundation for the pillars, you will need sand, cement, crushed stone, supporting elements, a shovel and a concrete mixer.

If you don’t know how to make a foundation, then the drawings will help you. First you need to remove the turf and dig a hole around the entire perimeter of the future structure. How to install canopy posts depends on the material used. Holes are dug under the supports. This work can be done with a drill. Then the racks are installed and filled with a cement composition with the addition of crushed stone. After this, it is necessary to fill the ditch around the entire perimeter at ground level. If you want to know how to properly install a car shelter at your dacha, then remember that you need to let the foundation settle for a couple of weeks.

Marking for the foundation

The extension involves the installation of a high-quality platform. In this case, it needs to be covered with crushed stone and paving slabs laid.

When selecting materials, take into account the design of the structure near the house and the building itself. If everything is made of timber, then construction from boards is an excellent option. If the entire dacha ensemble was built using corrugated sheets, then the rest of the structures are made of the same material.

A polycarbonate car roof is capable of transmitting sunlight, which makes the entire structure light. At the same time, for construction in the yard, you can use polycarbonate of various thicknesses and a varied color palette. Various roofing materials are used for covering.

We build a structure according to a design that takes into account the shape of the roof (single-pitched, double-pitched or domed version), as well as the height of the structure and wind and snow loads. This is especially important if the carport is attached to the house.

In the table you can see the important points of the construction process.

Creating a metal frameThe metal frame can be welded. For this you will need a profiled pipe, a welding unit and a grinder.

Construction of a wooden frameA simple option made from timber. To do this you will need bolts and nuts, a hacksaw, a wrench for the size of the bolt and a beam. All elements are treated with antiseptic compounds.

Installation of supportsThe locations of the pegs are measured using pegs and twine. Holes for racks need to be dug to a depth of 50 cm. It is recommended to weld pieces of reinforcement in the lower part for greater durability. The supporting parts are placed in the recesses and filled with concrete.

Installation of roofing elementsAlong the entire perimeter of the frame, you need to tie the top and bottom. Before welding, the parts can be secured with clamps. It is necessary to make a large number of corners and then attach them to the frame. Then these elements are secured with ties. In this case, they will serve as sheathing and stiffeners.

Final workCover the metal with two layers of anti-corrosion paint, and the wood with an antiseptic. Roofing material is laid over the corners and secured to the frame.

How to lay out the flooring under a canopyThe budget option involves the use of rolled lawn or seeded grass. You can also use gravel chips, clinker bricks or paving slabs.

In the photo you can see what a building made from scrap materials looks like. And also in the video below you can see a step-by-step installation of such a design.

If you want to build a yard canopy on the cheap, you can make the structures out of fabric or a banner. When deciding how to build a building, consider different options and designs. You can also look at the garden version of canopies. You can see how to build a structure in the garden or yard yourself in step by step wizard class.

When constructing structures, remember these rules:

  • the best distance between supports is 1.15 meters, and the length of the structure is selected depending on the number of cars;
  • when choosing a height, do not forget that you need to take into account the dimensions of the car with the trunk;
  • supports can be made of timber, concrete or brick;
  • The most inexpensive, strong and durable materials include polycarbonate and corrugated sheets.

The canopy can be decorated with wooden bars, as well as beautiful forged elements. Can be used to decorate light buildings beautiful plants, grapevine and climbing plants.

Beautiful decor

During construction work on your dacha or suburban area, sooner or later the question arises: where or where is the best place to park your car? Is it worth building a large permanent garage, or can you make a less budgetary, but extremely practical carport? In this article, we will take a closer look at how to make a carport for your dacha with your own hands and tell you why you should choose this option.

Carport: photo of an extension to a house

This material conditionally divided into two large chapters:

  • The first part tells about what kind of shelters there are for your “iron horses”. A complete classification is described, starting with the type of roof and frame, ending with the type of structure and the material from which it is made.
  • In the second chapter we will look at how to build a carport with your own hands. As an object, we chose an arched structure with a frame made of a profile pipe - the most common option.

You can also use the services developed by our team:

  • Calculation of the price of polycarbonate in the central regions of the Russian Federation, depending on the thickness of the material and other parameters.
  • Calculation of the price of a canopy depending on its type and modification of your car.

A polycarbonate carport on a summer cottage is a common practice among people who value their vehicle. Building such a structure is not a difficult task, and you will be using it for quite a long time. At the same time, your car or truck will be protected from adverse natural influences.

Why you shouldn't leave your car without shelter

First, let's talk about safety precautions. Surely you love your car and would not want it to spontaneously break down. What can threaten a car in the country? Hail, for example, can cause significant damage to the exterior, and strong gusts of wind can cause branches and rocks to get into the car, damaging or breaking the windows. It’s so easy to avoid this, just install a small canopy over the car to the house. The problem will be solved, and while the car is away, you will be able to organize picnics and parties under the canopy - this design is multifunctional.

Country carport options

The variety of design options makes you throw up your hands at first - which carport is better to choose? You have to think for a long time when looking at models. However, we would advise you to consider this design not only from a functional point of view. Don't forget that the aesthetic part is also important. Builders will tell you that the best carport is the one that is quick to build. We will try to decide which one is suitable for your site.

With a metal frame for the house

By type of design

When determining the type of design, you must rely on the dimensions of your car. Carports are divided according to the type of construction into:

  • folding;
  • open;
  • closed;
  • sliding

Each of them has both its own advantages and a number of disadvantages.

Folding carports

Folding carports are an ideal option for a small area - in fact, they are an extension of the canopy of your veranda and can simply be rolled up when not needed. This folding design is as practical as possible, it does not take up much space, however, it will not become a second kind of gazebo, and it is unlikely to protect you from slanting rain.

Closed carport

Such a building is, in fact, a semblance of a garage, only with less energy consumption for its construction. The design has sheathed walls and fits perfectly into the overall landscape design, resembling a gazebo. Its only drawback can be considered bulkiness, because a closed carport is usually not adjacent to the house, but is usually a separate structure.

Outdoor carport

This carport is a type of covered gazebo, but without sheathed walls. It's easy to install (it's unlikely to take you more than a day to build), and you can also use it as a gazebo. The disadvantages are obvious: such a carport at the dacha will not protect against snow and will not become a refuge in the winter.

Carports: photo of option for two vehicles

Sliding carport

A sliding carport is an opportunity to kill two birds with one stone: to cover the car and not take up much space on the site. Difficulties may arise at the assembly and installation stage - sometimes it can be difficult to understand the construction schemes, especially if this is your first experience in constructing such objects.

Sliding canopy option

If you don’t yet know how to make a carport, now it’s time to decide on roofing materials. This is an important part of the construction, and the choice must be made carefully. There are several optimal solutions:

  • polycarbonate;
  • metal profile;
  • metal tiles;
  • textile.

Polycarbonate carport

A country carport made of polycarbonate is an option for those who value their time. The material is practical and has a number of useful properties for construction:

  • light weight;
  • low price;
  • flexibility;
  • ease of installation
  • durability.

The downside may be that it is not environmentally friendly. Also, if not properly cared for, scratches often appear on this material.

This material for the roof of a carport looks more presentable than polycarbonate, however, it also requires more when installing. The metal profile is coated with polyester or plastisol - this significantly strengthens it, making it the most reliable. You can also note the distinctive features:

  • sustainability;
  • durability;
  • strength.

The disadvantages of a metal profile lie in the price (the material is not cheap) and in its certain “sonority” - raindrops falling on the roof can be too loud.

When choosing this material for the roof, be sure of its durability and practicality. This material is distinguished by:

  • light weight;
  • fire resistance;
  • attractive design.

However, metal tiles have a drawback - the material is too noisy during rain or hail.

A fabric carport is the best way to protect your car from the sun. The fabric is an awning, it is lightweight and its installation is quite simple. Unfortunately, it is hardly possible to call it durable, because such a canopy will need to be periodically updated - remove the awning and replace it with a new one.

By roof type

The roofing material has been selected and now it is important to decide which type of roof is right for you. The roof can be:

  • single-slope;
  • gable;
  • arched, etc.

Project for one car made of wood and tiles

Single-pitch canopy

A lean-to carport is the most economical construction option. Typically, such a structure is adjacent to the house and perfectly protects not only the car, but also the entrance to the house.

In order for such a roof to be reliable, however, you will have to seriously try - mainly, make sure that the angle of the slope has a sufficient degree of inclination. Otherwise, your carport with a pitched roof will collect a lot of snow in winter, which can cause it to sag or even collapse.

The option with a pitched roof is good if your car is small.

Gable canopy

Gable shed with metal roof

A gable roof is a more reliable option for winter. It is also important to take into account the fact that its construction will take a little more material and time - the drawings for the structure will be more complex. A gable carport is most often installed at those dachas where people spend most times of the year, including winter.

Arched

Arched carports are cheaper than gable carports. There are quite a few options for their designs, but most often such structures are made from an 80x80 mm profile pipe and 8 mm cellular polycarbonate. In this case, beams are most often used: 80x80 and trusses: 60x60/40x20.

By frame type

The roof is one thing, however, the frame of this building is important. They come in a variety of forms, each with its own positive and negative properties. The following types are distinguished:

  • wooden;
  • metal;
  • brick;
  • forged.

Most often, a frame is selected for the purpose of maximum integration into the landscape design of the site (in other words, so that it is in harmony with nearby buildings).

Wood

A carport frame made of wood is an ideal option for lovers of environmentally friendly materials. Wood is used quite often, and there are a number of objective reasons for this:

  • low price;
  • attractive appearance;
  • availability of processing;
  • reliability of structures.

Soft tiles on the roof of a gable carport

However, there are also disadvantages. One cannot help but recall the easy flammability and susceptibility to rotting. It is also necessary to constantly treat with insecticides.

If you still decide to give preference to a wooden canopy, then you can familiarize yourself with the main types, characteristics, average prices and photographs of wood in an interactive form.

Metal (corrugated pipe)

A metal structure is, first of all, a reliable building. Metal is not afraid of destruction, it is durable and easily withstands bad weather. It is also worth saying a few words that such canopies will not cost you that much - if you choose corrugated pipe as a material, then the assembly will not increase your budget.

The disadvantage of the material will, of course, be corrosion - you will have to periodically treat the frame with anti-corrosion agents.

Brick is a material that makes sheds more like good-quality garages. Brick has quite a lot of advantages:

  • strength;
  • little fear of temperature changes;
  • durability;
  • aesthetic appeal of buildings.

Frame on brick pillars

Unfortunately, the material also has many disadvantages: it is not cheap, and it takes quite a long time to build from it; you will also have to think about a stronger foundation, because the construction will be heavy.

How to lay out the floor under a canopy

The final stage in the construction of a polycarbonate carport is laying the floor. Please note: the decorative component here will fade into the background, because it is important that a car can be driven on the floor - therefore, the material must withstand serious weight loads.

Single-pitch made from corrugated pipe

The ideal option would be a stone or simply concrete floor. To install it, you need to dig a hole up to 40 cm deep, fill it with sand and crushed stone, and then fill it with concrete mixture. To ensure the resulting area dries evenly, use an old rag to cover the concrete.

Exploitation

Making a carport out of polycarbonate with your own hands is not all; some troubles will still remain. Wooden structures will require wood treatment and painting. Metal ones must be coated with an anti-rust solution. Plastic structures can develop holes over time - they need to be either replaced or patched. How to make the maintenance process more efficient depends on the specific type of canopy.

When arranging a country house, cottage, or yard, it is worth setting aside a place to park your car. To protect your car from rain, snow, hail and other negative weather conditions, you can build a carport made of wood. This design is obtained quite quickly, but at the same time it is fully capable of ensuring safety for the iron horse. But before you do it, it’s worth considering important features. The strength and durability of the structure depends on knowledge of all the nuances and details.

Types of awnings

A carport made of wood is a convenient design that has many positive features. First of all, it protects the car from negative weather conditions. At the same time, it is quite easy to install; for this reason, even a novice home craftsman can make a canopy.

Carports made of wood can be of several types:

Canopy materials

To make a high-quality and durable carport made of wood with your own hands, you need to thoroughly prepare. To begin with, it is worth understanding what parts the structure consists of, usually it includes the frame and roof. The frame is considered the most responsible, so it must be made of durable materials.

The frame for a car canopy can be made from the following material options:

  1. Tree. This material is considered the most affordable and practical. It is easy to process and does not require the use of special tools for cutting and joining. But still, compared to other types of bases, wood is not durable. Over time, the material cracks, deteriorates, rots, and becomes covered with fungus. And to increase its service life, special care must be taken. Additionally, it is recommended to treat the wood surface with impregnations, varnishes, and protective paints;
  2. Steel profile pipe. In order to make a carport with your own hands from metal, you need a welding machine. But the finished structure can last for several decades. However, steel profile pipes have negative aspects - the creation of curved trusses is required for the roofing of wide canopies. If this is not done, the entire structure may collapse under the weight of snow;
  3. Combined options. Often, when constructing a carport, two types of material are used at once. The buildings look beautiful and stylish steel frame and paneling made of wooden slats. They combine durability and stylish design.

The second part of the carport is the roof. It can be made from profile sheet or polycarbonate material. Both materials have good strength characteristics, durability and beautiful appearance. Polycarbonate carports will look more airy and aesthetically pleasing.

For areas where large hail frequently occurs, it is recommended to use more expensive types of polycarbonate that have a protective film.

Features of site preparation

It is recommended to start building a carport with organizing the space. Its size depends on the number of machines that will be installed. If a small structure is planned, then the area of the space should accommodate one standard car.

When preparing a place for a canopy, you should follow these recommendations:

  1. Once a construction site has been selected, all grass, turf, and weeds must be cut off.
  2. Must be removed top part soil to a depth of 12-15 cm. Instead, a cushion of sand, crushed stone is laid, and compaction is additionally used.
  3. During preparation, a small slope is constructed along the way. And if the area is low-lying, then drainage pipes are laid around the perimeter.
  4. After making the canopy, any parking covering can be laid on the sand bed.

If the canopy is being built for a heavy SUV, then a reinforced concrete screed is suitable for the base.

To do this, plank formwork is created, it needs to be filled to the middle with concrete, then reinforced mesh is laid out and topped up concrete mixture. Complete hardening of the site occurs within a month.

Optimal dimensions of the building

In order for carports made of wood to be convenient and comfortable, it is important to consider the dimensions; this must be done at the preparation stage, which will allow you to avoid serious problems in the future.

To accommodate a standard car with a length of about 4 meters, a canopy with dimensions of 5x2.5 meters will be convenient. But for parking large cars, for example a minivan or jeep, it is worth making a structure with dimensions of at least 6.5 x 2.5 meters.

Be sure to remember to maintain the required height level. The design should not only include the car itself, but its cargo on the roof rack. But still, you should not make the canopy too high, this may negatively affect its service life. The point is that when strong wind there is a possibility of the roof and its supporting elements becoming loose, and this often leads to the destruction of the entire structure.

If you are planning carports made of wood with a height of more than 3 meters, then it is important to think in advance about the arrangement of cross beams with a strong base. They should cover the entire perimeter of the structure, this will greatly increase the strength of the wooden canopy. The roof should be gable; this roofing option is considered the most durable and stable.

Preparatory stage

To create a strong and durable carport attached to a house or a permanent structure, it is important to prepare necessary tools and materials. First of all, we mark out the place for the future structure - for this, a machine is installed in the construction area, and places for supporting elements are outlined. It is imperative to check that the supporting elements do not interfere with installing the car and opening the doors.

Usually the roof is longer than the canopy. It can extend beyond its perimeter by 50-100 cm, this is considered normal.

If polycarbonate carports are planned, the drawings will be the most important stage of construction. They are the ones who will help you do everything correctly and exactly according to the given parameters. You can make the drawings yourself or find them ready-made on the Internet.

At self-production It is recommended to draw the planned structure on paper in several projections - from above and from the side. It is important to correctly calculate the required amount of material. It is advisable to add 10%, this will eliminate the need to purchase additional funds for construction.

For the frame, you can use a steel pipe or a wooden beam, it all depends on the desire of the owner. But if a tree is chosen, it will definitely need to be treated with special protective coatings.

Carports are manufactured using tools and materials from the following list:

  • saw;
  • hammer;
  • if a canopy is being built from timber, then nails will be needed to secure it;
  • to work with a profiled pipe, you will also need a welding machine;
  • level;
  • plumb line;
  • pegs;
  • twine, any strong rope or cord will do;
  • shovel;
  • clamps;
  • Self-tapping screws will be needed for fixing and fastening;

How to make an attached lean-to carport out of wood

As was said earlier, in order to make a strong and durable lean-to carport from wood, the drawings must be completed in advance. Without them, the construction process will not be entirely correct; they will help you perform preliminary calculations and allow you to purchase the required amount of materials.

When everything is prepared, you can begin the process of constructing a lean-to structure:

  1. The first step is to install the supporting elements. For them, it is worth using durable timber; preference should be given to options made of pine. Its cross-section should be 7.5-16 cm.
  2. Holes are drilled in the ground into which the support pillars will be installed. The depth of the holes should be 4.5-6.5 cm.
  3. The installation of the pillars must be correct. To do this, you can use a level or a rail; it is placed on top of the supporting products. Usually there is a space left between the hole and the pillar; it is recommended to fill it with cement mortar, this will strengthen the pillars and they will stand firmly in place.
  4. At the next stage, the rafter system is assembled. It is made of timber with dimensions of 15x5 cm. The distance between the rafters should be no more than 100-120 cm. On one side they are attached to the surface of the wall, and on the other side to the supporting elements. For fastening you will need screws and metal corners;
  5. Edged boards are nailed perpendicular to the rafters; they should have a thickness of about 4 cm and a width of 15 cm. The result is small cells with dimensions of 90x90 cm;
  6. Roofing sheets are laid along the grid. For a pitched roof, slate or metal covering options are suitable.
  7. To extend the service life of the canopy, the wood must be treated with special protective mixtures - impregnation, varnish, paint.

Making a stationary canopy

Many people often wonder how to make a polycarbonate carport with a free-standing structure? Of course, it is not necessary to use polycarbonate; slate or metal roofing will do, but that’s not the point at all. To make a durable and strong structure, it is important to stock up on the necessary materials in advance.

To make a small carport for one car you will need the following consumables:

  • three bags of cement;
  • sand;
  • crushed stone with a fine structure;
  • wooden supports – 6 pieces;
  • board with dimensions 3x10x60 cm - 15 pieces;
  • timber 5×15×60 cm – 13 pieces;
  • roofing materials, polycarbonate, slate, metal tiles are suitable. A total of 18 square meters will be required;
  • bolts with dimensions 10x150 - 10 pieces;
  • self-tapping screws for metal tiles – 160 pieces;
  • 500 grams of nails.

To make a canopy with a gable roof, it is important to do everything correctly in accordance with the diagram. Drawings in this matter will be necessary; they will help calculate all the elements and allow you to mark the location of all important parts of the structure.

Before making polycarbonate carports with your own hands, prepare all the necessary lumber. They are treated with antiseptic coatings, which will protect them from insects, mold and fungal infections.

Using a tape measure, the length and width of the building are marked. Next, a rope or cord is pulled along which the supporting elements will be installed. One support column is installed in each corner of the future canopy, and they are also placed along the walls every 3 meters. Then holes are dug in the ground to a depth of half a meter.

The process of erecting a canopy

After this, the following actions are performed:

  1. Posts are lowered into holes in the ground. It is important to make sure that they are evenly deepened; for this, use a level or a long board.
  2. Once the outer support elements are completely aligned, you can begin installing the intermediate pillars.
  3. It is necessary to ensure that residues from precipitation and debris do not linger on the roof surface. To do this, you need to make a height difference between the left and right sides of the building. The size of the difference must be at least 4.5 cm.
  4. To ensure that the supports stand firmly in place, they are filled with cement mortar. It is prepared from crushed stone, cement and sand in a ratio of 4:2:1.
  5. A beam with dimensions of 5x15x60 cm is placed on top of the racks. The distance between each beam should be about 80 cm.
  6. Beams are also laid across the canopy. In the center and along the edges, the beams are fastened using 3x10x60 cm boards and nails.
  7. Finally the roof is installed. It is attached using self-tapping screws, and all excess is cut off.

It is imperative to build a drainage system through which water from rain and snow will drain from the roof.

To do this, ebb tides are installed around the perimeter of the canopy. Special fastenings for gutters are fixed along the entire length; they are screwed with self-tapping screws. And then ebbs are mounted into the fasteners.

Building carports is not an easy task, but it can be done. The main thing is that everything needs to be thought out and prepared in advance, and calculated correctly. Drawings or diagrams that you can make yourself or use already will help in this matter. ready-made options. Preliminary calculations will help you purchase the required amount of material, and will also allow you to do everything as needed.

The process of building a simple carport - video

A carport is a simple, reliable and practical way to protect your iron horse from precipitation, “surprises” of birds, sunlight, and leaves. At the moment, there are many options for how to make a carport, they differ in size, shape, and material of manufacture.

In the article we will talk about the technical features of the construction, discuss the advantages and disadvantages of various designs, which materials are better to choose. We will also offer drawings and step-by-step instructions on how to build a carport with your own hands.

Good to know: With a roof slope of 25°, for every meter in length, 300 mm of height is added, so if the carport is 5 m, then the rear pillars should be higher than the front ones by: 5 * 300 = 1500 mm.

Less often, sheds are equipped with a gable or hip roof; these are large and complex buildings designed for multifunctionality, for example, the first floor is for a car, and the second is a gazebo.

Types of roofing materials for a single-pitched rafter system:

  • profiled sheet;
  • roofing felt;
  • soft tiles;
  • metal tiles;
  • ondulin;
  • slate;
  • polycarbonate;
  • awning

Under the curved, arched roof, a polycarbonate carport is installed. Usually this is a metal arc-shaped structure, welded under a truss from profile pipes or a forged product.

Area

The area for a carport can simply be covered with crushed stone, but more zealous owners install a concrete slab, pave it with natural stone or paving slabs.

Which canopy is better?

Each type of material has its own advantages and disadvantages. Thus, wood is susceptible to rotting and burns, metal rusts, special welding equipment is required, and these materials require constant maintenance. Building from brick and stone is troublesome; it requires masonry skills, effort to mix concrete, and the time investment is greater than equipping a wooden and metal shed.

For metal structures, a round steel pipe with a diameter of 100 mm or a profiled one with an edge of 80 * 80 mm is suitable. The distance between supporting structures is 1.5-2.0 m; in some cases, three-meter spans are allowed, but such options require complex engineering calculations.

For purlins - profiled pipe 40*80 mm, for large carports - 80*80 mm, for mauerlat 100*100 mm or 150*150 mm, for metal sheathing - pipe 40*40 mm, for rafter system made of wood - edged board 100*40 mm.

According to standards, the dimensions of a carport should be 1 m larger than the car in length and 1-2 m in width.

Using corners and brackets, we attach supporting metal posts with a diameter of 50-100 mm to the columnar foundation, check the plumb line, and install slopes to maintain the geometry.

Advice: Choose fasteners made of galvanized steel, this will avoid corrosion and subsequent destruction of materials.
