How does a Polaris water heater work? How to use a water heater correctly: operating instructions for flow-through and storage units

Boilers produced under the Polaris brand are the optimal solution for those who are looking for a “workhorse” at an affordable price. The company has been producing water heaters since 2000. Today, flow and storage devices for horizontal and vertical type, varying in power and volume.

The manufacturer states that the original “water heaters” are assembled in Italy, Israel, Russia and China. But practice shows that on the Ukrainian market it is easier to find boilers from China than those made by its closest neighbors.

Don’t think that if it’s Chinese, it won’t last long. With proper operation and regular maintenance, Polaris boilers work flawlessly for years.

90% of breakdowns that appear over time are classified as typical:

  • The water remains cold or does not heat up to the set temperature. The first reason is a faulty heating element; the layer of scale that forms on the tube of the heating element does not allow heat to pass through, and as a result the water does not heat up. Another reason is a broken thermostat;
  • the unit does not turn on. When an electrical appliance shows no signs of life, first check the voltage in the network. If this is all right, then the problem is a faulty cable or control board;
  • The water coming out of the tap is rusty and has an unpleasant odor. These are characteristic “symptoms” that it is time to clean the boiler;
  • The indicator light does not light up. The reason is faulty internal wiring or a burnt-out LED;
  • a leak appeared. There are two options: it drips at the joints of the pipes - the problem is solved by replacing the pipes or additionally sealing the joints. The second option is sadder - the tank leaked. This malfunction cannot be repaired; the water heater has become unusable.

3 tips to extend the life of your water heater

And for the future: if you want the unit to not cause trouble, follow simple operating recommendations.

Make it a rule:

  1. Change the magnesium anode every 1–2 years.
  2. Clean the heating element and the walls of the tank from scale as they become dirty: as a rule, once every 2-3 years (the frequency depends on the quality of the tap water).
  3. If the slightest problem occurs, you need to diagnose and repair the device.

Getting the unit back to work is not difficult if the work is handled by professionals. But even easier, and most importantly, cheaper, is to monitor the condition of the boiler.

Self-repair and maintenance of an electric boiler

Design of all water heaters despite the fact that there are a lot of different modifications on sale, it is almost the same. The difference is in the materials used, the power of the heating elements, volume and design. But the breakdowns are the same. The boiler design is quite simple. An electric water heater consists of two, usually steel, tanks: internal (working) and external. The internal tank, like the external one, can have a different coating to protect it from rust or can be made of stainless steel. The thickness also varies. Here, the thicker the better. Between the tanks there is a thermal insulation layer of polyurethane foam. The building contains
two pipes: a short one with a divider for supplying cold water and a long one for extracting hot water. The electrical part of the boiler is mounted on a flange and consists of a heating element, thermostat, signal lamp and magnesium anode.

The temperature indicator is used to indicate the heating or cooling process. The water heater always comes with a safety valve, which must be installed on the cold water supply pipe during installation.

If you install an electric boiler yourself A simple diagram will help you. There is nothing complicated here, it is important to connect all the pipes correctly. When using a water heater, it is highly recommended to carry out and connect the grounding. Electric current and water are a rather dangerous combination. At a minimum, it is necessary to use an RCD. The use of an RCD for a storage water heater is highly desirable, especially at the dacha, as it will avoid electric shock, reduce electrocorrosion and indicate a malfunction of the water heater by frequent shutdown of the RCD. The RCD can have a rating of RCD 16A 10mA or RCD 16A 30mA or with a higher operating current, depending on the power of the water heater.

Tips for choosing the type and type of electric water heater will help you decide when purchasing a new device for heating water.

A safety valve is included with the water heater. If, for some reason, it was not in place, then it is worth purchasing this necessary element separately. The safety valve should be screwed onto the blue outlet using tow or fum tape. An emergency shut-off valve must be installed on top.

The same must be done with hot water, only without the safety relief valve. Shut off the supply valve hot water on the central riser. If you do not have a tap or meter after check valve, and the tap will be open to supply hot water to the apartment, while there will be no hot water in the entire house, all the hot water from your boiler will flow through the pipes to the neighbors on the riser. You can completely turn off the hot water supply tap and not use it if you plan to use the boiler all the time.

Main malfunctions of an electric boiler

The most common problem is a leaking tank. This is mainly due to corrosion of the inner surface. To prevent its occurrence, manufacturers install magnesium anodes in their units, which protect the metal from corrosion. However, these devices are also short-lived. Therefore, timely replacement of the anode is very important - this significantly extends the life of the boiler. Sometimes there is a leak under the gasket at the connections of the inlet or outlet pipes. Then you are lucky and it is quite easy to “treat”. If there is a leak in the tank itself, then this is the worst malfunction, which is almost impossible to fix on your own. All attempts to brew and the like are just a waste of time and nerves. In this case (if the warranty has expired), there is only one way out - buying a new one. Here you need to approach more responsibly the choice of material from which the internal tank is made, and also not skip maintenance (replacing the anode) in the future.

Faults that you can identify and fix yourself:

1. If cold water flows instead of hot, then most likely the problem lies in a malfunction of the heating element.

In some cases, these symptoms may be caused by a poor electrical connection between the thermostat and the heating element or problems with the power supply in general. Failure of the heating element itself is also possible.

— The water in the switched on boiler does not heat up.

— When the tank is connected to the network, the ouzo instantly triggers, this indicates a short circuit.

Replacing the heating element of a water heater, even a serviceable one, must be carried out at least once every five years. The water we use is not best quality, so scale often appears on it. Even if you regularly clean it off the heating element, it still falls off to the bottom of the tank. Sediment can be identified by the presence of characteristic sounds, roaring noise when the liquid is heated, and also by the presence of a sulfur smell. If the heating element is frequently descaled, it may begin to “open up”, causing the water to emit an electric current or simply cause a short circuit.

Disconnect the water heater from the electrical network and water supply, then completely drain the water from the tank. Remove the cover (panel) blocking access to the heating element. Use a multimeter to measure the resistance; if the heating element is intact, the device will show low resistance; if there is a break, then the resistance tends to infinity.

To do this, the tester probes are installed on the contacts of the heating element.

When the probes touch the heating element, the multimeter displays resistance values, for example, 0.68 or 0.37. If a unit appears on the left of the display, this means that a break in the spiral has occurred in the heating element.
Immediately check for "body leakage".

DIY electric boiler repair

One multimeter probe is connected to the copper tube, and the other should touch one of the contacts (terminals) of the heating element. If it is faulty, the device will show a minimum (with a minus) or, conversely, a huge value. In the case when there is no “leakage to the housing” in the heating element and it is working properly, the tester will show a so-called open circuit, for example, number 1.

It should be remembered that even a seemingly working heating element can penetrate the housing; by the way, this can also be checked with the same tester. Remove the heating element. Most likely you will see the heating element in a large amount of scale, its amount depends on the hardness of the water in your region. The tank should be rinsed and all scale removed. Then install the new heating element in the old place, you can also replace the gasket, after which you can assemble the boiler in the reverse order. Before turning on the new heating element for the first time, it is necessary to fill the tank with water, otherwise the heating element can be burned. Before disassembling, write down the connections of all electrical contacts and wires - then it will be easier to connect them back correctly.

2. If the water is too hot, then this symptom indicates a thermostat failure.

Thermostats are designed to maintain a given temperature of the water in the tank, as well as for emergency shutdown of the heating element, like all electrical parts, they have their own service life, which means they need to be replaced at some point.

As a rule, the thermostat is installed on the heating element itself or next to it, does not touch the water, which means replacing it does not require draining the water and in general this is a much simpler procedure than replacing the heating element. You just need to remove the panel from the boiler, disconnect all the wires from the thermostat and replace it with a new one, it is very important to connect all the wires in their places. It should be remembered that all work should be carried out using similar original thermostats on tanks disconnected from the electrical network.

3. If the on and off cycles are very frequent, this may indicate that a large amount of scale has formed on the heating element. If such signs appear immediately after purchasing the device, it means it has a heating element installed that does not correspond to the capacity of the tank.

The “enemies” of the heating element are the impurities contained in the water, which adhere to its surface in the form of scale. Scale changes the heat transfer from the heater surface to the water. As a result, firstly, the time for heating water increases and, accordingly, energy consumption. And secondly, there is insufficient heat removal from the surface of the heating element: its temperature turns out to be higher than the normal operating one. This leads to damage to the water heater.

4. Magnesium anode- this is a tube that is installed inside the boiler and protects its internal surface from corrosion, located next to the heating element. Magnesium is a more reactive substance than iron, so it reacts with oxygen faster. Thus, the anode, while collapsing itself, protects the walls of the water heater. If the anode is not replaced in time, it will completely collapse and the walls of the water heater will begin to corrode. It requires periodic replacement, but if it is carried out regularly, your boiler will last much longer.

How to repair a boiler yourself?

You can repair instantaneous or storage type water heaters (volume 50, 80 and 100 liters) yourself, without contacting a service center for repairing equipment at home.

The main thing is to know the internal structure and purpose of each individual element of the water heater.

In the article we will look at common breakdowns and the possibility of do-it-yourself repairs of water heaters of different brands, including Ariston, Termex and Electrolux.

Do-it-yourself boiler repair Ariston

To independently repair Ariston storage water heaters (volume 50, 80 or 100 liters) at home, you need to familiarize yourself with the main design components:

  • Temperature sensor. If it breaks down, the boiler will not stop working, but it will not be possible to determine the temperature of the water and its quantity;
  • Thermal insulating casing - due to it, the temperature of the water in the Ariston water heater is maintained;
  • The outlet pipe for hot water to flow outside, as well as the heat-insulating element, does not require repair;
  • Water supply tube;
  • Metal or plastic outer shell of the Ariston water heater;
  • The inner container is made of stainless steel, with a wall thickness of up to 2 mm. May require replacement if it is damaged by electrocorrosion caused by anodic current;
  • Magnesium anode – resists the effects of anode current and protects the internal container from corrosion;
  • Ten is a water heating element. The speed of heating water depends on its power. This element, more often than other parts of the Ariston boiler for 50, 80 liters, requires DIY repairs;
  • Thermostat – performs the function of automatically starting water heating;
  • Insulating seals require scheduled replacement. They perform the function of sealing the joints of the Ariston water heater structure and provide electrical protection.

The design of Ariston instantaneous electric water heaters is similar to the storage type, but it does not have a storage tank of 50, 80 liters, and the heating element has a higher power.

Problem with the electronic board in the Ariston model

If the electronic board of the water heater fails, you will need basic knowledge in the field of electrical engineering.

Since the board is put into operation in parallel with the electrical power circuit of the heating element, it can be turned off and the circuit can be connected as on conventional boilers, after which the equipment will work.

Malfunction and repair of the heating element

When the Ariston boiler is turned on, the heating element operation indicator does not light up, the water does not heat up:

  • Using a tester, we determine the malfunction. Having set the scale on the measuring device to 220-250V, we measure the connection of the thermostat and the cable at the terminals; at normal voltage, we proceed to measuring the voltage of the heating element. If in this case the voltage is normal, it means that the heating element itself has broken;
  • Turn off the boiler and set the tester to a resistance measuring scale. We disconnect the heating device from the thermostat, the ends of the heating element are exposed. We carry out measurements on the contacts; if the device is working properly, the tester will show a certain level of resistance (accuracy is not important here). If there are no indicators, the heating element of the water heater cannot be repaired.

A thematic video will complement the above.

Repair of water heater TM "Termex"

Repair of Thermex water heaters, if the heating element breaks down, is carried out according to the diagram below.

A malfunction of a water heating device is determined in the same sequence as for an Ariston 50 liter storage boiler.

  • Drain the water - to do this, attach a drain hose to the cold water pipe and drain the water into the sewer;
  • Then we photograph or remember the wire connection diagram, after which we disconnect them;
  • We remove the temperature sensors. Using a 14mm wrench, unscrew the flange and remove everything;
  • We install the new heating element into the thermex water heater in the reverse order. When installing the thermal sensors back, they are lubricated with thermal paste so that they can be easily removed if necessary.

Repairing the thermostat in a thermex water heater

If the functionality of the storage water heating heating element is recognized, but it does not turn on, it means the thermostat has become unusable:

  • Drain the water and remove the thermostat from the flange. Using a tester, we check two contacts by placing the device handle at max. If the tester does not respond, then it is necessary to replace the thermostat with a similar one;
  • You can check it yourself in another way. Set the thermostat knob to min, then lower it into hot water at 60°C. The thermostat circuit should open. In this case, the measuring device should not react; if there is a reaction, then the thermostat is faulty.

Replacing the magnesium anode

The first sign indicating the need to replace the magnesium anode is the accumulation of scale and salt deposits on it.

Magnesium anode is the key to full and long-term operation of all internal elements Thermex water heating design, its replacement cannot be delayed.

Since the rod is fixed to the flange with a nut, it is easy to remove and replace with a new one.

Electrolux boiler repair

Repair of Electrolux instantaneous water heating systems may be necessary:

  • When the protective connection device (RCD) is turned on frequently. The reason for the frequent activation of the RCD in electrolux electric boilers is the failure of the batch machine or the incorrect connection of the neutral and ground wires. Most often, the protective connection device cannot be repaired, but requires replacement;
  • When the check valve of electrolux electric water heaters leaks. When operating an Electrolux boiler, it is possible to detect a leaking check valve. To carry out repairs to correct the problem, connect a hose to the drain hole and drain water into the sewer. If the leak is intense, it is recommended to check the valve itself for further suitability.

    DIY boiler repair

    If the check valve is working properly, it is worth checking the water pressure in the Electrolux system using a pressure gauge. If it exceeds 3 atm, then you will have to equip the electrolux water heater with a special regulator;

  • When the tank leaks in electrolux electric water heaters. The leakage of water from the body of the Electrolux boiler cannot in all cases be eliminated with your own hands. Moreover, if such a leak occurs, the water heater must be disconnected from the power supply. The problem of depressurization of the internal part of Electrolux equipment can lead to fatal consequences. Leaks through the holes under the cover may be caused by deformation of the flange seal or inaccurate hole alignment.

Polaris water heater repair

The problem of scale formation on the heating element concerns not only the Polaris water heater, as it is a common cause of breakdown of boilers of various brands.

If, when there is a power supply and the indicators are working, the Polaris water heater behaves strangely and stops turning on automatically even when the thermostat sets a certain water temperature, then the problem is a malfunction of the heating element.

In addition to complete failure, the heating element may stop working due to the formation of a layer of scale on it.

The last option will require cleaning it and cleaning the thermostat probe, scale on which prevents the automation from turning off or on the heating element:

  • To clean the heating element, it must be removed from the boiler. This is done as described above, when replacing the heating element of a Thermex water heater. If the heating element is difficult to remove due to scale, then carefully clean it with a slotted screwdriver;
  • Then the thermostat and heating element are completely cleared of scale using a knife and a special substance;
  • It is also recommended to replace the magnesium anode here.

Heating the cold water supply pipe

There are two reasons why the cold water supply pipe becomes hot:

  • Safety valve failure;
  • The valve is not installed correctly.

The solution to the problem comes down to replacing the safety valve or installing it at the junction of the boiler pipe and the cold water supply pipe.

The absence of a safety valve threatens water hammer, resulting in a tank rupture.

When the thermostat in the water heater becomes unusable, the household appliance cannot be used. Strange sounds indicate a breakdown. If you hear them, turn off the water heater. Steam began to accumulate in the tank. The best way out of the problem is timely repair of the faulty part.

What is a thermostat in a water heater

The purpose of the thermostat (thermostat) is to maintain the set water temperature. He turns the heating element on and off. If the heating element breaks down, thermal protection must be triggered.

There are 3 types of thermostats:

  • rod;
  • capillary;
  • electronic.

If you have a Vaillant water heater, then to replace it, you need to know exactly which model to buy. To a man far from repair household appliances, it is better to seek help from professionals. They will replace the damaged part with an original spare part. This guarantees a long service life of the device.

Each type of thermostat has characteristic features:

  1. Rod thermostats are in a special tube. Its length varies from 25 cm to 45 cm. This type will be required for those who have a Thermex water heater.
  2. Capillary thermostats They are tubes containing liquid. Its volume depends on the temperature of the heater. At certain temperature values during the heating process, the liquid begins to exert pressure on the membrane connected to the electrical contacts.
  3. Electronic thermostats two are installed in the water heater at a time. One of them regulates the temperature, and the second provides a protection function. The thermal resistance, which is part of the electronic thermostat, reacts to changes in the temperature of the liquid.

Replacing the thermostat in a water heater

The process of replacing the thermostat is faster than replacing the heating element: there is no need to drain the water from the tank.

You need to do the following:

  • Disassemble the water heater housing.
  • Disconnect the thermostat from the wires.
  • Remove the thermostat from the appliance.
  • Check the integrity of the thermostat using a tester.
  • If the cause of the water heater breakdown lies in a malfunction of the thermostat, replace it.

Most thermostats have thermal protection, so sometimes water heater stops working, if the thermal protection function is triggered.

To rule out this possibility, first try clicking on the corresponding button. If the device works, it means it is in good condition.

Water heater Polaris - Malfunctions and repairs

However, you should be wary of the fact why the thermal protection function worked. It is possible that the heating element is coated with scale and needs to be cleaned. In addition, the water heater may stop working if the heating element breaks. The heating element should also be ringed to ensure its serviceability. In any case, any breakdown must be repaired in order to maintain the functionality of the water heater - this also applies if your water heater is leaking.

If you are not sure that you can correctly determine the cause of the malfunction yourself, then call a household appliance repair service. Trust the professionals to do their job!

3. Installation

Installation of the device is carried out by the buyer at his own expense.

The manufacturer is not responsible for problems caused by improper installation and neglect of the recommendations of this manual, namely:

a) The electrical connection must be made in accordance with the rules in section “3.3.2 Electrical connection”.

b) The safety valve included in the delivery must not be plugged or replaced.

To reduce heat loss along the length of the pipes, the device should be installed as close as possible to the place of hot water consumption. To facilitate maintenance of the device, leave space for free access to electrical parts (approximately 0.5 m). In addition, it is recommended to install the water heater at a distance of 20-25 cm from the ceiling and adjacent walls.

3.1. Installation Requirements

§ Despite the fact that the device has good protection against current leakage, we recommend installing a protective regulator on the power circuit (RCD) and ensuring reliable grounding.

Electricity sources rated at 220 volts and 50 Hz are used.

§ The rated current values for the protective regulator on the power supply circuit must be no less than the current values for the water heater.

§ Keep the safety regulator on the power circuit clean to prevent current leakage.

§ A safety valve must be installed on the cold water receiver filler hole.

§ The drain tube installed on the pressure relief valve must face down and be free.

§ The wall to which the heater is attached must be strong. If the wall cannot support the double weight of the heater tank filled with water, the user must install a support under the bottom of the heater.

§ A water drain must be provided at the place where the heater is mounted.

3.2 Mounting method

1. Select a suitable location to install the water heater. In accordance with the markings presented in Figure 1, using a drill with a diameter of 12 mm, drill four holes in the main wall on the same line.

2. Insert the dowels into the holes and secure the bracket to the wall using self-tapping screws. (When installing the water heater in a wall recess, use the dimensions shown in the diagram on page 5).

3. Hang the water heater, securing it to the brackets. Make sure the screws are tight and the water heater is securely fastened.

4. The heater must be mounted in dry, dark places; in order to avoid heat loss, the heater must be mounted in a place located as close as possible to the water supply.

3.3 Preparation and connection

3.3.1 Connection to the water supply system :

1. Hoses and connections connected to the water heater must withstand operating pressure up to 6 bar and temperature up to +80°C.

2. With a standard connection, the water heater operates under pressure determined by the pressure in the line.

The water heater inlet pipe is connected to the water supply system through the safety valve included in the delivery set.

To avoid damage, do not use too much force when screwing in the safety valve.

The safety valve has two functions:

Allows water to flow in one direction only

(is a check valve).

At pressures above 6 bar, the water bleeds out through a hole on the side.

(calibrated at 6 bar).

The appearance of water droplets from the safety valve opening during water heating is a natural process and is associated with the expansion of water in the tank when heated. We recommend connecting the valve hole with a flexible outlet tube to the drain system.

Under no circumstances should the valve opening be closed!

If the water pressure in the main exceeds 5 bar (atmospheres), a pressure reducer should be installed after the water meter.

Connection diagram for several taps

Connection diagram for one pin

3.3.2 Electrical connection.

1. Reliable grounding must be provided.

2. Use energy sources with a voltage of 220 volts and 50 Hz

3. To connect the water heater to the electrical network, use a two-pole switch (preferably an automatic switch) with a distance between contacts of at least 3 mm.

4. A residual current device (RCD) should be installed in the power supply circuit. Seek advice from a qualified professional.

Make sure that the mains voltage corresponds to the value indicated on the marking plate (nameplate).

Usage

Immediately before turning on, fill the water heater with water. To fill the water heater with water, it is necessary to open the common valve of the water supply network and the hot water use valve. The appliance is completely filled with water when it flows out of the hot water tap at full capacity.

Attention! Only when the device is completely filled with water can the heating element be connected to the electrical network.

After filling the water heater, close the hot water tap, inspect the unit and make sure it is not leaking. Plug in the water heater.

1. Turn on the temperature controller control buttons:

temperature adjustment" (left) and the "on - off" button (right)

The "temperature adjustment" button is used to control and set the temperature.

The "on - off" button is used to start and stop the heater.

b) Digital display (two-digit, eight-position): used to display temperature adjustment and its actual values (00 - 99), issue warning signals (E2-E4)

c) Standby mode: the heater is on, but no heating is produced. The gauge displays the current water temperature reading.

d) Switching on mode: switching on is done by pressing the “on” button, the display shows the value of the previously set temperature (if the temperature is not set, then the display shows the initial temperature of 750C). If after 5 seconds no adjustments are made to the water temperature, the display will set the water heating temperature and begin heating / maintaining the set temperature.

If the water temperature is lower than the set temperature, the heater continues to operate.

If the water temperature is higher than the set one, the heater stops working and the system goes into mode maintaining the set temperature.

When the mode of maintaining the set temperature is turned on, when the temperature drops by 50C, the heater turns on.

e) Mode of maintaining the set temperature: the heater is on, press the “temperature adjustment” button, the display will show the previously set temperature, by pressing the button go to the operating mode, the set value will light up on the display, then with each press of the button the temperature value will increase by 50C . The sequence of temperature changes is as follows:

35→ 40→ 45 → 50 → 55 → 60 → 65 → 70 → 75→ 35

If you stop pressing the button within 5 seconds after stopping adjustments, the value is set and returned to the initial position.

f) When you press the “on-off” button again, the heater goes into standby mode and displays the water temperature value on the display.

2. Overheat protection:

If, while the heater is on, it stops working and goes into protection mode, then its further operation is possible only after the malfunction is eliminated.

a) insufficient water level: if during checks the temperature in the heater increases by more than 20 C in 4 seconds during 7 consecutive starts, check the water level in the heater. In this case, the “E2” mark appears on the display screen. If it appears, you must disconnect the heater from the power supply and recheck after filling.

b) temperature sensor malfunction: when the temperature sensor is short-circuited, the “E3” mark appears on the display screen.

c) malfunction of temperature readings: if during control the temperature exceeds 900 C, then the “E4” mark will appear on the display screen. Turn off the power and check. If the safety device is activated due to overheating, automatic start-up cannot be performed. Repairs must be carried out in a specialized workshop.

3. When the water pressure is less than 6 bar, the safety valve may leak. This is normal.

4. If you do not use the heater for a long time, close the cold water supply valve and disconnect the device from the electrical network.

5. Points that require attention

1. When using the heater for the first time, completely removing water from the tank and removing sediment, make sure that the device is filled with water and only then plug it into the network.

2. If the power cord is damaged, it should be replaced with a special cord or kit obtained from the manufacturer or its agent.

3. In winter and cold areas, when the heater is not used for a long time, drain the water from the heater. To do this: close the cold water supply valve, open the drain valve on the safety valve and open the hot water tap on the mixer, then drain the water.

4. Do not use plastic or aluminum hoses as supply pipes.

5. This electric water heater requires a safe and reliable grounding.

6. A safety valve must be installed on the electric heater fill tube.

7. The heater fill and drain holes cannot be closed at the same time.

8. The external cross-section of the water heater electric cable must be at least 2.5 mm2, and the protective current leakage regulator must be designed for a current strength of at least 25 A.

9. This type of electric heater is equipped with electrical cables, do not have connectors, therefore, to connect to power supplies, use switches that provide reliable interruption (for example, switches or circuit breakers, the distance of the interruption point must be at least 3 mm).

6. Service

During operation, clean the heater once every six months.

Sequence of actions: disconnect the water heater from the network, turn off the water tap, open the drain valve by turning the handle, open the drain hole (be careful not to get scalded) and drain the dirt.

If there is severe scale formation in the heating tubes or a large amount of sediment, remove the heating tubes and clean them. When reinstalling them, observe the following steps: the bolts should be tightened evenly, without significant force, and the fixing support should not be tilted. The power supply can only be connected after the product has been filled with water. If the heater is not used for a long time, turn off the cold water supply tap and disconnect the water heater from the power supply. If the water pressure exceeds 6 bar, drops of water may appear at the drain hole of the safety valve or a leak may occur.

a) A rare appearance of water drops on the drain hole of the safety valve means normal operation of the heater. To prevent water droplets from appearing on the safety valve drain hole for a longer period of time, keep the cold water inlet valve open.

b) Frequent drops of water appearing on the drain hole of the safety valve means that the water pressure is higher than normal. In this case, it is necessary to install a pressure relief valve on the cold water supply pipes, which should be located at the maximum distance from the heater.

c) To drain the resulting drops of water, a drain tube can be used, the end of which should be directed downwards and not be closed.

d) The approximate service life of the magnesium anode is 1 year, after which it is recommended to replace it by service center specialists.

Water heaters are a necessary household appliance that can make life much easier. We propose to consider how to properly connect a water heater to the electrical network, to the water supply system, in the country, as well as the installation of a horizontal boiler in the country and in the apartment and the general installation diagram.

Detailed description of connection and design

Using this method, you can connect a storage water heater from Atmor, Elenberg, Eltron, Etalon, Ferroli, Gorenje, Polaris, Stiebel, Thermex, Vega, Termex, Ariston, and others. It is considered the most effective option for connecting a simple vertical boiler, but first you need to understand the design of the device.

A standard boiler consists of the following parts:

  • element that heats water - heating element;
  • a tank that maintains the water temperature at the desired level;
  • thermostat;
  • water drainage and supply systems.

The most important thing when choosing a boiler is the method of attaching it to the wall (vertical or horizontal) and the volume of the tank. Most often, vertical devices are used in modern apartments: they take up much less space than horizontal water heaters and connect to the water supply system much easier and faster.

Step-by-step instruction:

A fuse or safety valve is a special device that serves to protect the tank from rupture at very high temperature or pressure. This can happen if the liquid pressure in the tank exceeds the nominal value (standard value is 0.6 MPa). The pressure valve hole must be open, because often home professionals simply forget to ensure that excess hot water is drained into the sewer in a timely manner, thereby exposing themselves and their family to serious danger.

It must be said that a standard valve included with a water heater most often simply does not cope with its task, and we recommend immediately purchasing a protective device separately, having already taken into account the needs and capabilities of the boiler.

  1. The valve consists of a whole system of parts, including a plumbing tee, the valve itself, an “American” coupling, a reverse-acting valve (which prevents hot and cold water from mixing, which means it saves energy and reduces pressure on the internal tank of the boiler);
  2. Now, using pipes and compression hoses, we drain the water into the sewer. If necessary, simple garden hoses can be used, although they are not intended for use in hot water conditions;
  3. We seal the connection using a special sealant and leave it to dry for 4-8 hours. We turn off the water long before the start of the process; even a slightly damp pipe will not be sealed and will quickly “disperse”;
  4. Next, we continue to connect the boiler to the water supply system.
  5. We advise you to give preference to pipes made of polypropylene materials; they have a much longer service life and are easier to install than metal ones. We connect them by welding polypropylene and leave them to dry a little. Some craftsmen carry out this operation with only metal-plastic pipes, but they are much more difficult to install and less reliable;
  6. Then, using a ball valve, we supply cold water to our boiler, connect, check and, if necessary, secure with sealant the junction of the water supply hose and the inlet opening;
  7. Through the same ball valve we also discharge hot water; this provides for connecting both a storage water heater and a flow-through one;
  8. It is necessary to make the system in such a way that when the taps are closed, water does not flow, but if you close the riser valve, liquid can be used;
  9. Now, depending on whether we are connecting an electric water heater or a gas water heater, we need to connect the device to the power system and check its operation. When using the first method, all the requirements of the PUE are taken into account: moisture-proof sockets (especially in the bathroom), grounding of a household appliance; most likely, you will also need a separate RCD for a two-phase boiler, etc.;
  10. Check the condition of the cable; it must be moisture-resistant, durable and elastic.

Installing a floor-standing boiler

Installing a floor-standing or horizontal boiler does not take much time, but it is a very extensive job. They often have a power of more than 50 kW, and they weigh about a hundred kilograms, so they are difficult to transport or simply move independently. The system is connected to hot and cold water in the same way as a vertical water heater, with the only difference being that the drain hole is on top.

Video: installation of a water heater

The grounding system is also more serious; a separate outlet is provided for powerful boilers. You can easily do it yourself, just branch a wire from the iron part of the device and connect it to independent conclusion to the ground.

This device is mainly used in production because... it has a fairly large volume, and the price is high - from 80,000 rubles (the cost was taken into account in the regions of Yekaterinburg and Moscow).

As you can see, connecting an instantaneous water heater is a simple task that requires maximum concentration. If you attach the coupling incorrectly or tighten it poorly, then breakdown is inevitable, and this can also significantly reduce the service life.

No special documents are needed if you are buying a water heater and not a gas water heater.

Large-sized equipment and compact devices for heating water are actively involved in creating comfortable conditions. Few city dwellers know how to use a water heater, because... their apartments are connected to a centralized hot water supply. However, if you have to live in a Khrushchev building or in a dacha, information about the operation of complex units will be extremely useful, don’t you agree?

With us you will receive informed answers to all questions that arise when using the devices. In the article we have proposed, the topic of water heaters is discussed in detail, their types and design features are indicated.

The specifics of installation and rules for proper operation are described in detail. Technological subtleties and nuances of care are indicated. To make it easier to understand, the information is supplemented with photos, diagrams and video tutorials.

Flow models heat the water coming from water pipe immediately after opening the tap. Visually, such models are significantly smaller in size and are mounted next to the crane.

A type of instantaneous water heaters is a special tap. It does not require a lot of electricity and can be a real godsend for the garden

Depending on the fuel consumed, storage and flow devices most often include:

The first ones have a higher initial cost, but pay for themselves after 2 years. The latter are initially 2-3 times cheaper, but due to the high cost of electricity, already in the third year of use they are more expensive for their owner.

This dependence is valid with constant use.

Flow-through heater models can be equipped with a kitchen spout and shower head. They are mounted next to the faucet to avoid large heat losses

If we are talking about seasonal stays at the dacha and the use of small volumes of warm water, then the electric option will come in handy for a potential buyer.

After all, electricity is supplied to many summer cottages, but as for gas, the situation with its availability may be worse. And if you rarely use the device, it will consume very little electricity.

Regardless of the type of water heating device purchased, you must handle it carefully and use it for its intended purpose. Moreover, the operating features of all similar models are similar, but there are also fundamental differences.

To avoid harming an expensive device through ignorance, it is better to read the instructions on how to properly use a specific water heater model.

Subtleties of operating flow-through units

Differences in appearance and the design of flow-through and storage models cause some nuances during operation.

Therefore, before starting to use the unit, it is important to carefully study the recommendations specified by the manufacturer.

A flow-through tap water heater can be used not only in the country, but also in a city apartment. It is easy to install and connect yourself

The most common requirements that must be met before operating storage and flow-through models are as follows:

  • installation of a coarse filter;
  • strictly horizontal installation;
  • grounding for electrical appliances.

The horizontal position is checked by the building level. Strict adherence to this rule will help prevent the formation of air locks.

It is also important to consider that there are models that can only be installed horizontally or only vertically. If you neglect this rule, the equipment will, at best, not work, and at worst, it will simply burn out.

Small models of vertical flow electric heaters can easily fit into the kitchen design. And a 10-liter device won’t take up much space.

There are also models that provide a user-selectable mounting option - horizontal or vertical. The design features of the device are designed for any position and this will not affect further operation.

Instantaneous water heaters are produced by many domestic companies. Also on the market you can find a large number of offers from European and Chinese companies.

Storage water heaters come in both horizontal and vertical types. Moreover, this rule applies not only to small-volume boilers

Many manufacturers offer storage models that require gas or electricity to operate.

The first option, when constantly used by a family of 5 people for 4-5 years, will cost 3-4 times less than the electric option in terms of the total cost of purchasing, connecting and paying for gas. Although, the cost of the unit itself in stores is about 2.5-3 times cheaper than a gas appliance.

You can only operate a boiler that is correctly installed and connected to the power supply network. The specialist who carried out all the work is obliged to put a note about this in the warranty card and test the quality of installation of the equipment.

Without his signature and seal of the organization, in the event of a breakdown, the guarantee cannot be used.

If everything is installed by a responsible technician, then the owner can begin to operate the water heater. First, you need to inspect the equipment from all sides and make sure that everything is intact, there is no visible damage, the wire and plug have not melted anywhere and nothing is leaking.

If the visual inspection was successful, you need to fill the boiler or make sure that it is full. To do this, open the water supply valve to the unit and unscrew the hot water tap. As soon as water starts flowing from the tap, the storage heater is full.

Now you can plug the device into the socket and press the “on”/“on” button on the case. Control and adjustment are carried out using the corresponding buttons.

Depending on the equipment model, control and adjustment of the desired temperature can be carried out mechanically or by entering appropriate commands on the monitor.

The technical perfection of the device directly affects its cost. In everyday life, models with the most necessary functions and simple controls are most often purchased. The simpler it is, the fewer breakdowns in the future.

You may find the information about self-help, discussed in our other article, useful.

In practice, electronically controlled water heaters do not tolerate installation in a bathroom. It is advisable to avoid installation in a room with high humidity levels

When operating, it is important to follow all the rules described by the manufacturer in the instructions for a specific device. Also, never turn on a broken heater.

If the external condition causes concern or traces of melting are visible on the wiring or plug and socket, you should definitely contact a specialist.

If the storage unit is the main source of hot water in the house/apartment, then, in order to save money, you should not unplug it.

Thanks to the installed thermostat, the device will turn on to heat water only when necessary. As soon as the water reaches the desired temperature, it will automatically turn off.

This work allows you to use electricity or gas as economically as possible if it is a gas water heater. It is advisable to turn off the equipment only in case of a long absence of the owner and all residents of the house, cottage or apartment.
