Boat designs for self-build. We are building a cruising dinghy “Nord” Canoe page 206 cue magazine home shipyard

This comfortable and seaworthy boat can be built with waterproof plywood, planks or steel. Six people can travel on it, who will be accommodated in three cabins. The boat is also convenient for weekend tourism, when the ship becomes a floating holiday home that will take its crew to their favorite vacation spot...

The proposed equipment option - typical for boats with a length of 8.5-9.5 m - provides sufficient comfort on board for a group of 6 people. on a long journey through the inland waterways. The details of the equipment and the quality of their workmanship depend on the ingenuity and skill of the builder, as well as on the quality of the materials at his disposal...

Despite the fact that the Argo is shorter than the Progress or Kazanka-MD, it has a closed wheelhouse with two permanent berths, which can comfortably accommodate four people at the table. While underway, the driver and one passenger are seated in the cockpit on folding seats; two more passengers can sit on the lid of the aft locker. Thus, there is room in the cockpit for all four crew members. The cockpit is protected from splashes by a developed windshield...

That's exactly how it was. A huge number of projects were viewed. The main area of my family's planned voyages is Oka with access to the Volga and its reservoirs. Let me remind you that the Oka River is quite shallow, with numerous shallows and sand spits. Consequently, it was necessary to combine relatively high seaworthiness and minimal draft. Keel options and even mini-yachts-compromises have disappeared, as have all “mini” options less than 5–5.5 m in length.

It became clear that a dinghy was needed, but it was not possible to find a suitable dinghy, because there was also a limitation on the length of the hull: in the room I had, it was possible to lay a vessel no longer than 5.7 m.

In the end, I decided to take as a basis the sharp-cheeked plywood yacht compromise “Corsair”, sketches and data of which were given in the issue. 1, and a description of the constructed version and comments on its design by the famous designer A. Karpov are in No. 83.

Since A. Karpov also recommended turning the Corsair into a shallow-draft, clean dinghy, I did so. Along the way, I modernized it somewhat appearance yachts - reduced sheerness, changed the shape of the stem, and also gave the transom a slope (along the line of the extension of the backstay), which at the same time simplified the maintenance of the outboard motor.

From the very beginning, I abandoned the “high” deckhouse in the middle part of the yacht in favor of the “forecastle” option. This significantly simplifies construction and ensures tightness, with only a slight effect on the comfort of the interior.

The main dimensions and contours remained the same (with the exception of the chine in the bow of the hull). The building is built according to traditional technology with plywood sheathing (FSF brand) on a pine frame, except for the centerboard well, in the design of which oak and bakelized plywood are used.

On the bottom, the thickness of the skin is 10 mm; the transom lining and cockpit flooring have the same thickness; sides, deck and bulkheads - 6 mm. When assembling the hull (keel up) on a transverse set placed on a slipway along shergen strips, the keel and bilge stringers, as well as the remaining longitudinal connections, are assembled from two parts on stainless steel fasteners.

After finishing the set, sheathing sheets are installed on it, which are joined together in place on backing strips. The casing is pre-impregnated with two layers of epoxy resin, and the finished body is covered with two to four layers of fiberglass. Internal surfaces are impregnated with drying oil and painted.

The well is covered inside with two layers of fiberglass. After pasting, the outer surface of the body must be leveled with epoxy putty and sanded until the fabric structure of the pasting disappears. It is better to paint the finished hull with special paints for fiberglass, including antifouling (the last layers are below the waterline).

The folding centerboard is made of glued slats with a lead weight (based on the design of the centerboard for the “Shrimp” - see No. 38). The hinged steering wheel is made similarly from slats and covered with fiberglass (its drawing is also there in No. 38, as are the sketches of the main frames).

To simplify the rigging work, I did not furl the jib, I went along the path of expanding the set of jib (besides the main one, there are also sails of a smaller area - 6 and 35 m2 and a storm sail of 2.5 m2). A bulwark appeared in the cockpit and railings along the entire length of the sides.

The sailing rig has undergone some changes, since the yacht was built mainly for travel. Top-of-the-line weapons with a collapsible mast shortened to 6 m were used. The entire spar is made of aluminum pipes: the mast is 70 mm in diameter, the boom is 60 mm.

The mast is placed on the deck on a step with a powerful cushion between the beams on the shank. 2 and 3. The general arrangement and equipment of the yacht is clear from the illustrative material. Of course, each builder will decide this issue based on their capabilities and tastes.

I remember the statement of the builder of “Lagoon” (“KiYa” No. 183–185) that a sailboat for shallow inland routes does not necessarily need to be equipped as an autonomous vessel, because land is always nearby.

It seems to us that a family cruiser should be equipped for sailing “offshore”, that is, have a galley, sleeping places, and a toilet (it doesn’t exist yet). We installed the tile (on a suspension) on the left side next to the table and kitchen cabinets.

“Nord” was launched at the end of July 2004 and has already been tested on voyages along the Oka River. Rolling showed good positive stability. During the next navigation, the performance was tested on the Gorky Reservoir, sailing in a fresh wind and on waves up to 1.5 m high.

The yacht obeys the helm well, is fairly centered, rides the wave easily, and the cockpit remains dry. In light winds it is not inferior in speed and steepness to dinghies of the “T2” type and, to some extent, even “Micro”. But in strong winds begins to heel strongly, so you have to reduce sail; The low weight of the boat and insufficient ballast (~150 kg of lead under the floorboards) have an effect.

One of the disadvantages is the small width of the stern part of the boat, which leads to its overload when there are three people in the cockpit; one crew member has to be sent to the forepeak or to the forecastle (in the given table of ordinates, the aft part of the hull has already been made wider by 250 mm).

There is also a slightly larger windage of the hull, but this is a natural price for normal living conditions in the cabin. The wooden centerboard constantly swells and gets stuck in the centerboard well. Otherwise, the yacht turned out great and you can sail on it.

Three people - the optimal crew in long-distance voyage. The Veterok-8 outboard motor is somewhat heavy and is used at half power. A 4–4.5 hp motor would be optimal, but for now I’m using the Salyut: it scrapes properly against the current on the Oka. That's all I wanted to say about another modernization of the Corsair project.
