DIY upholstered headboard: decorate your bedroom. DIY soft headboard

Textile decoration of the house makes its interior more cozy, soft and comfortable. But it is these qualities that are especially important for the furnishings of a bedroom. Beds are most often decorated with fabric and leather. Such products are beautiful, cozy, but expensive. The decision to cover the bed with fabric yourself will help not only save money, but also create original furniture: a delicate crib for your princess, a solid family bed decorated with a carriage frame, or something else very special.

When choosing the most suitable material for bed upholstery, consider not only the interior of the room (the decor used, its color, shape, texture). Be sure to pay attention to the properties of the fabric. To keep its shape, it must be dense; so that in a year or two you don’t have to think about repairs - durable; Of course, it should not collect too much dust and be easy to clean with the means available to you.

To decorate your beds with your own hands, you can:

  • take old furniture, then, taking into account the initial data and your capabilities, improve it appearance;
  • use a ready-made product of simple design;
  • according to your measurements, make a frame with an orthopedic base yourself or in a workshop.

Bright bed in art deco style

It is not worth saying that creating a beautiful, stylish and at the same time high-quality product yourself is absolutely easy. But a little effort, care, good materials and a description of the process will undoubtedly help in the work.

Such a bright bed is perfect for almost any interior and will decorate it. The bed will fit especially well into a spacious room that is not overloaded with decorations and furniture, since it itself is an attention-grabbing decor. The only thing you need to pay attention to is to think over an individual color scheme.

Preparing to decorate the bed

So, first of all, you need to take care of the base of the bed. Having carefully thought through the size of the bed, choosing a ready-made appropriate orthopedic base, drawing the desired headboard shape that suits your interior, you can make the bed itself from MDF. To do this, use the instructions and description of assembling the bed on the Internet or order the work from professionals. The last option is the simplest and most reliable.

To decorate a finished structure with fabric, prepare:

  • Decorative textiles.
  • Textiles for covering the back parts of the bed.
  • Foam rubber about 5 cm thick.
  • Furniture glue.
  • Scissors.
  • Sharp carpenter's knife with replaceable blades.
  • Decor for the headboard - finishing furniture nails.
  • Hammer.
  • Furniture stapler with staples.
  • Tape measure, chalk for marking.
  • Sandpaper or sander.
  • Adhesive tape if you also plan to make the structure's trim (except the headboard) removable.

Before applying decor to the MDF parts, sand the cut areas of the bed base parts and the ends with sandpaper. Having a sanding machine will greatly speed up this process. This way you will be able to avoid damaging the fabric while working.

Description of work

  1. We start covering the bed with decorative material from the headboard. We dismantle the required part of the frame.
  2. We cut out a piece from foam rubber that should repeat the outline of the sheathed MDF headboard. We cut it out using a carpenter's knife. The task is not easy. If, as in our project, the headboard has a complex shape with roundness, the cutting of the foam can be ordered at the place of purchase or in a furniture workshop using a prepared pattern.
  3. Apply glue to the front surface of the headboard, then lay the foam rubber tightly on it so that the curved edges match as much as possible.
  4. Attach the edge of the foam to the MDF base using a furniture stapler, placing the staples a short distance from each other.
  5. Cut out decorative material for the headboard. On the right, left and at the bottom, leave an allowance for fastening of about 10 cm. At the top of the figured headboard, make the allowance larger by 5-7 cm, so that it is convenient to carefully lay out the corners, or leave a rectangle so that you can cut off the excess later.
  6. To ensure that the fabric lies flat, align its bottom edge and begin fastening it with a furniture stapler.
  7. Then place the headboard in a vertical position and stretch the fabric.
  8. To properly drape the corners of the figured top, cut the fabric. Fix the laid out fragments with a stapler to the back of the headboard.
  9. Stretch the fabric in the same way and attach the textiles to the sides of the headboard. Check the correct tension of the fabric and start decorating the surface with furniture nails.
  10. Using a hammer, carefully attach nails along the top edge of the headboard, laying a strip evenly along the visible outer edge (except for the bottom).
  11. Then, using chalk and a tape measure, mark with a line the location for the second finishing row of furniture nails at a distance of 15-20 cm from the edge.
  12. Using a stapler, we fix the decor along the line to the MDF base.
  13. We lay furniture tape over the staples exactly along the line and secure it with a hammer and nails. Decoration of the headboard is completed.
  14. To give this part of the bed a finished look, we cut out a blank from technical fabric prepared in advance, making an allowance of 1.5-2 cm for the hem. We fasten the fabric with a stapler.

Now you can start working on decorating the frame.

  1. We prepare blanks of foam rubber for gluing the base.
  2. Apply glue to the surface, glue foam rubber along the entire perimeter of the end of the frame (except for the part where the headboard is attached), then along the top part.

In this project, the soft frame of the case is covered with technical fabric, and the decorative cover will be removable and attached with adhesive tape.

  1. Cut strips of technical material to the size of the surface of the sidewalls, make allowances on all sides by 2-3 cm.
  2. Fastening with a stapler to the top and then to the bottom of the frame, sew the foam rubber with prepared strips of technical fabric.
  3. Use a stapler to attach the Velcro tape to the frame.
  4. Make a pattern for a removable cover. Before cutting out the fabric, try it on again to ensure the item fits correctly.
  5. After adjustments, the parts can be cut out. Sew the cover. Do not forget to attach adhesive tape to it at the attachment points.
  6. Place the cover on the frame. Place the headboard in place.

The bed is ready. It will not only decorate the interior of any bedroom, but will also become an excellent place for a complete, comfortable rest.

Other ways to upholster a bed with textiles

When decorating a bed with fabric, the main role is played by the choice of material and the method of designing the headboard. For example, a product in cotton with a small pattern will differ from a similar piece of furniture upholstered in velvet or leather-like textiles. But this will have virtually no effect on the work of the master.

One of the most popular methods of upholstering upholstered furniture all over the world is the carriage tie. Often this method of decorating a bed is used not only on the headboard, but also decorates the entire rigid external structure.

How to make a carriage tie

For work you will need:

  • plywood or MDF for the base;
  • foam rubber 5 cm thick;
  • furniture glue;
  • basic and technical fabrics;
  • strong threads;
  • decorative buttons;
  • long needles;
  • furniture stapler;
  • drill with drill and attachment for large holes in foam rubber.

To decorate the head of the bed with a carriage screed, you need:

  1. Mark the screeds on the base (in squares or diamonds).
  2. Drill through holes at the marked points with a drill.
  3. Transfer the markings to the foam rubber.
  4. Using a special device, make holes in the foam rubber with a diameter of up to 1 cm.
  5. Glue the foam rubber onto the base so that all the holes match.
  6. Having covered the surface with decorative textiles, begin to sew holes, tightening them with special buttons and forming folds between the ties;
  7. After this, drape the edges with the same folds and attach them to the back using a furniture stapler.
  8. To cover the frame of the stock with fabric, use the description from the first project.

Such an elegant decorated element of the bed as a headboard can become the main idea for decorating the entire room. Use your imagination to create your own cozy corner.

Headboard with soft squares

A slightly similar to the previous, but easier to implement finishing option is to decorate the headboard with individual soft squares/rectangles glued to the base and covered with textiles. Thus, you can decorate a bed for a nursery, make a product in patchwork style or for any other style by choosing the appropriate material or a combination of them.

Tools and materials for work

  • plywood sheet 150x75 cm for the base;
  • 18 small plywood squares 25x25 cm;
  • decorative fabric with a symmetrical pattern (you can alternate different colors and patterns);
  • padding polyester or other similar artificial filler;
  • stapler for working on furniture;
  • scissors;
  • wood glue or liquid nails.

Before starting work, prepare the wooden parts - sand them, level their ends with sandpaper. According to the size of the squares, making allowances on all sides of 5-8 cm, cut 18 pieces of decorative fabric accordingly.

Step-by-step instruction

  1. Place the plywood square in the middle of the fabric square. Using a furniture stapler, attach the fabric to the back of the wooden piece only on one side and slightly on the sides.
  2. Fill the resulting pocket with padding polyester. Distribute the filling evenly.
  3. Secure the remaining edges by closing the square.
  1. Make the remaining 17 blanks in the same way. Make sure they have the same amount of filler.
  2. Using wood glue or liquid nails, firmly glue the squares onto the base of the headboard.

All that remains is to use padding polyester (or foam rubber) and the same textiles to decorate the base. The bed is ready. Good night!

How to install a headboard with your own hands

It is now difficult to blame the furniture market for the lack of goods, but the problem is that on the factory production line, decoration of products is not given much importance, and the price of custom-made models is frightening. Let's find out how difficult it is to decorate the headboard yourself and try to create a decent soft headrest with your own hands.

Types of backrests

Illustrations Recommendations

Wooden headboard.

Natural board is considered one of the most simple options headrest

Knocking several planks into a shield, then opening them with stain and varnishing is not difficult for a home craftsman.

The construction costs pennies, is done quickly, the only problem is that the board is rigid and not suitable for all styles.

Headboard - panel.

Here, on the contrary, we are dealing with the most complex and expensive type of head restraints.

The very definition - a panel already implies some kind of meaningful ornament, which means that the master must have the talent to first create this ornament and then fit it into the interior of the bedroom.

Unlike wooden headrests, the panel can be made of any material.

Mirrored headboard.

A mirrored headrest looks unusual, plus it’s a great way to create the illusion of volume in a room.

But mirrored headboards are not very popular, for several reasons:

  • The mirror is more difficult to maintain;
  • The mirror is hard and uncomfortable to lean on;
  • The newfangled trend of Feng Shui does not welcome such headrests.

Key points when choosing a headboard

The choice directly depends on the personal preferences of the owners of the bedroom, so for creative people it is more important to match the general style in the interior, but taste is a delicate matter and we will talk about this a little later, but now let’s focus on the practical side of the issue.

If the owners lie in bed for a long time and like to lean on the headrest to read or watch TV, then the hard materials of such a bed are contraindicated, plus the headrest itself should have a height of 50–70 cm.

The choice of material in upholstered headboards is especially important. Based on experience, the most practical upholstery can be called natural or artificial leather (eco-leather). It practically does not get dirty, and if necessary, it can be easily washed with ordinary soapy water.

Another point is the size of the headrest. You need to choose a bed for a bedroom in a Khrushchev-era building without fanaticism; the height from the floor to the edge of the headrest should not exceed 120 cm. In spacious rooms with high ceilings, there are no restrictions on the height of the headboard.

Interior styles that will successfully complement the headboard

Illustrations Recommendations

Baroque.

The style was born back in the 19th century and is associated with unbridled luxury. Quilted velvet headrests framed by gilded monograms are considered the hallmark of Baroque.

Provence.

This style has the charm of the southern French countryside. Light pastel colors with upholstery bleached by the Mediterranean sun symbolize silence and tranquility.

Art Deco.

Simple and yet original interior. Smooth, strict shapes and natural materials are welcome. In such a bedroom, Empire style elements can peacefully coexist with African tribal decorations or abstract paintings.

Loft.

Ideally, the “Loft” style is focused on the rough, unfinished finishing of production workshops, hastily converted into housing.

As for headrests, a bed with any shape and type of upholstery will fit here.

Patchwork.

The textile theme of the patchwork quilt predominates here. For a novice craftsman who decides to make an original headboard with his own hands, “Patchwork” will be an excellent solution.

Ethnic styles.

Each nation has its own unique ornaments and methods of decoration. There is no universal recipe here; you need to focus on the interior of the bedroom.

Do-it-yourself bed interior and backrest decor with soft upholstery

If you do not take into account the carved options, then in order to make a wooden back from a board, no special skill is required; in this case, it is more important to come up with a shape and correctly fit it all into the interior.

A soft headboard is a completely different matter. There are 4 common options here - carriage screed, patch upholstery, cushion panels and fabric cover. I will give step-by-step instructions for arranging a carriage screed a little later, but now let’s talk about simpler options. But first, let's decide on the materials and tools.

Materials and tools

All of the above-mentioned upholstery options are made with the same set of tools from similar materials. The difference lies in the size of the budget, desire and availability of free time.

All material can be divided into types of boards for the base and an assortment of upholstery fabric. For a rigid base, 4 types of shields are used:

Illustrations Recommendations

Plywood.
  • To ensure proper rigidity, sheets with a thickness of 10 mm or more are used;
  • As for the brand, I recommend taking “FK” plywood; it is the cheapest, and most importantly, environmentally friendly;
  • Plywood is also divided into grades; the fewer knots and small defects on the front side, the higher the grade. Since the shield will be completely sewn up, we only need 3 grades (4 grades in total).

MDF.
  • The thickness of the MDF board under the head of the bed starts from 14 mm;
  • There is MDF with finishing and clean boards, we are better off taking the second option, finishing does not affect the performance characteristics, but clean boards are half the price.

Chipboard.

The thickness of furniture particle boards starts from 16 mm. But chipboard contains formaldehyde inclusions, so it is undesirable to use them in their pure form. To block harmful fumes there are 2 options:

  1. Buy laminated chipboard. The top layer of the laminate will not allow formaldehyde to evaporate;
  2. Paint the chipboard with oil paint.

Solid wood.

Usually a frame panel is made from a board 20 mm thick. Since the shield will be wrapped with a facing cloth, there is no point in taking a tongue-and-groove board; it is cheaper to buy planed planks.

The range of furniture fabrics includes dozens of models, we will not list them all now, we will only go through the most popular ones.

Illustrations Recommendations

Velours.
  • Fine-haired, pleasant-to-touch material;
  • Made from cotton or wool;
  • Ecologically pure;
  • The price is high;

Jacquard.
  • Smooth natural fabric with a noble sheen;
  • Most models come with an ornament;
  • The price is high;

Chenille.
  • Thick and dense fabric;
  • There are both colored and plain models;
  • Easy to wash;
  • The price is reasonable;
  • There are models with anti-claw effect.

Flock.
  • The fabric combines cotton and polyester;
  • Does not fade in the sun;
  • The price is reasonable;
  • Easy to clean;
  • It feels synthetic to the touch;
  • Strength is high;
  • Has fine pile.

Leather.

The most expensive natural leather of fine tanning is used for furniture upholstery, so home craftsmen rarely use it; leatherette predominates here.

The most popular material now is eco-leather. In essence, the same leatherette, only of high quality. Good eco-leather cannot be distinguished from natural leather, and the price is several times lower.

To create a good soft headrest, you also need filler and small fittings. As for the filler, in most cases furniture foam is used. For better contact with the facial tissue, the foam rubber is wrapped with padding polyester, although in thin panels, padding polyester can be used as an independent filler.

The carriage version of the screed involves the use of furniture buttons; I will tell you how to stitch and quilt them a little later. From the rest of the accessories you only need a thick nylon thread and glue for placing the foam rubber on the base panel.

The minimum list of tools is as follows:

  • Scissors;
  • Long needles for thick nylon thread;
  • Electric drill or good screwdriver;
  • Colored crayons;
  • Whatman paper or thick cardboard;
  • Metal ruler 1 m;
  • Roulette;
  • Furniture stapler;
  • Pliers;
  • Jig attachment for a drill (a device for drilling large diameter holes in foam rubber).

Upholstered bed headboard made of rags

Illustrations Recommendations

Soft base.
  • Foam filling must be glued to the headboard;
  • To ensure a smooth transition, the corners of the foam rubber are cut with scissors along the perimeter (the procedure is desirable, but not necessary).

Sintepon.

Upholstery fabric does not glide well on foam rubber, so it is advisable to wrap a soft pillow with padding polyester.

Fastening the upholstery.

As it is wrapped, the padding polyester is aimed at the base with a stapler. The pattern for attaching the front upholstery is similar; slightly tighten the fabric and adjust it to the base.

Bed attachment.

Once you've covered the base with a patchwork quilt, the shield is attached to the bed frame.

Some craftsmen screw the soft shield not to the bed frame, but to the adjacent wall at the head, which is also acceptable.

DIY headboard for a bed made from pillows

Pillow headrests can be made in two ways:

  1. You need to secure a strong crossbar above the bed; you can take a baguette for curtains. Next, take real pillows and sew loops to them, after which you hang these pillows on the crossbar;

  1. There are also stacked headrests made from pillows on a rigid base. The arrangement of such pillows is similar to the patchwork quilt described above, only the basis is not a thick board, but a fiberboard plate. When the required number of pillows are made, they are attached either to the rigid headboard or to the wall.

Sew a cover

If you have already purchased a bed with a hard headrest, and you don’t want to bother with the upholstery, there is another way out.

  • Measure the dimensions of the headrest and multiply the resulting result by 2;
  • According to these dimensions, cover the foam rubber sheet with the selected upholstery material;
  • Next, sew 4 ribbons in the corners;
  • Wrap the hard headrest in a soft cover and tie the ribbons together.

Quilted headboard using carriage screed technique

Of all the techniques for arranging a soft headboard, the carriage tie is considered the most difficult. At home, only plain fabrics or eco-leather are used for it.

Preparing the back frame

Theoretically, the shape of the frame can be any, but it is better for a home craftsman to start with a square or rectangle. Finishing semicircular and curved edges requires preparation. Plywood, MDF or chipboard are usually used as load-bearing panels. It is more difficult to upholster a wooden panel.

Hole marking

The holes are marked in a checkerboard pattern, the minimum interval between fixation points is 100 mm. I recommend initially making a cardboard template with hole markings; you will need it more than once later. The diameter of the holes on the shield for the carriage screed is 8 – 10 mm.

We fix the foam and fabric

Illustrations Recommendations

Stage 1.

Using a spray gun or brush, apply glue to the base.

Stage 2.
  • Glue the foam rubber to the base;
  • We wrap the shield with padding polyester;
  • On the back side of the shield, we pierce the pillow with wooden sticks through the holes.

Stage 3.

We take out the sticks one by one and drill through holes in the foam rubber using a jig.

Stage 4.

Using a paper template, we transfer the markings onto the canvas. Here it is better to use colored chalk, because the marker can then appear on the canvas.

Stage 5.

We tighten the fabric through the holes with a nylon thread, and shoot the tails of the thread from the back side to the shield at 3 - 4 points in a zigzag.

Sheathing the structure

Stage 2.

The bends are straightened with a blunt wooden stick.

Fastening the fabric

Illustrations Recommendations

Stage 1.

We stretch the fabric around the perimeter and shoot it with a stapler from the back side.

Stage 2.

In parallel with the stretching of the fabric, folds are formed on the canvas.

We tighten the buttons and fasten them

Illustrations Recommendations
Stage 1.

In the store we buy the base of a metal button and cut out a circle from upholstery material 2 times larger than this base.

Stage 2.

With an indentation of a couple of millimeters, we sew the circle with nylon thread.

Stage 3.

We put the metal base of the button into the resulting basket and tighten the nylon thread.

Stage 4.

Using a needle and the same nylon thread, we thread the buttons into the puffs and secure the thread with a stapler on the reverse side. The screed is ready.

Conclusion

The instructions for the carriage screed described above are not complicated, but in practice the work requires attention, so if you do not have the time or desire, it is better to stick to the simple options I have given. If after studying the material and watching the video in this article you still have questions, write in the comments, I will try to help.

The headboard of the bed is the hallmark of the bedroom, because this attribute always attracts attention. From this article you will learn how to make a headboard with your own hands so that it blends harmoniously with the overall interior of the room.

Ideas and options

First of all, you should decide which option is right for your bedroom. If you like to read books before bed, pay attention to the soft headboard. Similar option ideal for this purpose because it is comfortable to lean on. You should also consider sloping headboard ideas, which many people love.

If your room is decorated in a Country style and there is an emphasis on environmental friendliness, you can resort to a high wood headboard above the bed. For fans of the French provinces, a headboard in the Provence style is suitable.

Young families can make a beautiful headboard from scrap materials. In most cases, this option is the most acceptable, because the newlyweds do not have enough free finances for other ideas (decors with panels, photographs, pillows are suitable).

For this reason, when choosing an idea for a headboard, you should rely on your capabilities, imagination and abilities.

Popular headboard ideas include:

  • decorative panels. They can be made of wood, gypsum, textiles, and plastic. You can also choose soft panels, which are offered by many hardware stores. A wall decorated with panels of several types looks good. Come up with a fancy pattern or puzzle, surprising your guests with your originality;
  • suitable for rooms decorated in Provence and Country style old barn board or carved wooden shutters. You can resort to using it at the head of doors;

  • pillows hanging over the bed will help fill the headboard space. You can use multi-colored or plain elements;
  • quilted headboard always present in high quality hotels. If you want to fill your bedroom with elements of luxury, pay attention to this option. Such a headboard is easy to make with your own hands, spending very little money on its creation.

Materials

You can design the headboard yourself using a variety of materials. There are many ideas for decorating it with wood. You can use smooth painted boards or knotty ones with minor processing. The main role is assigned to the harmonious combination with the overall interior of the room.

If you are decorating a room in the Baroque style, a headboard in the form of a fence will not suit you, and every person should understand this. Even if your bedroom has a simple interior, which includes a classic set from a furniture showroom, the picket fence described above will also be inappropriate.

Such accents must be supported by furniture, lamps, accessories and other interior elements so that harmony is present. If you want to make a simple wooden headboard, for example, from plywood, this option does not require special support.

Metal headboards are considered the old-timers of the bed kingdom. They are actively used in various interiors, because such material is suitable for a romantic bedroom, as well as for a strict Scandinavian setting.

Mosaic and stone can be used as an alternative material for the headboard. From them you can make interesting patterns with elements of sea pebbles, tiles and even glass pieces.

Textiles, like wood, are often used to decorate beds. The material can bring a cozy atmosphere to the room. A wide selection of materials allows you to realize even your wildest fantasies. For example, heavy velvet will be relevant for Rococo or Baroque, and golden satin will be suitable for an Empire room.

A leather headboard is a stylish option. Some people prefer the eco-leather option because it is more budget-friendly. Based on the embossing and coloring of the material, such headboards will harmoniously fit into any interior.

A laminate headboard looks good on the wall. Many people decide to decorate the space above the bed with of this material. The headboard is original and stylish.

Subtleties of reupholstery

Many people decide to reupholster their headboard to give it a more attractive look. The most popular type is the carriage tie, which has been known since the 18th century. Previously, such trim was featured on carriages, hence the name. Today, this method is used in the design of furniture, as well as other decorative elements. The second name for the upholstery is Capitonne.

To make the result of your work look impressive, you need to cover the headboard with expensive and rich material that will look good with a large number of folds. Such materials include velor and suede. Many people decide to cover their headboard with leather.

You can decorate the screed pattern using squares or diamonds. Buttons are used as rivets, which are covered with similar material. If your headboard will feature beads or crystals, choose elements with a similar color or contrast.

To carry out the reupholstery, you should prepare the following set of tools:

  • furniture board or plywood, which will be used as a base;
  • high quality fabric. You should purchase material with a margin of 30 cm more than the length and width of the plywood;
  • foam rubber, the thickness of which is 5 cm. It should also be adjusted to the parameters of the selected plywood;
  • padding polyester;
  • buttons covered with fabric. They must have an ear;

  • drill;
  • knife;
  • crochet hook;
  • glue;
  • laces. You can use rope or twine. Select the thickness taking into account the diameter of the button eye;
  • stapler for furniture;
  • wall fastenings and screws.

Subtleties of constriction:

  • For such activities, you should choose a plywood sheet in the shape of a rectangle. If you wish, you can cut out the original shape that you like best;
  • cutting of foam rubber is carried out based on the dimensions of the plywood itself. You will need to mark the material, indicating the area where the buttons will be attached. Most often, buttons are placed in a checkerboard pattern. Using a sharp knife, make button holes in the foam sheet;
  • It is very convenient to make holes using a metal tube heated over a fire. You need to heat the pipe on a gas burner and quickly make holes. In one approach you can get about 2-3 holes. Do not forget to place a piece of board under the material so as not to damage the floor surface;
  • Now you can put the material on the plywood and use a pencil to mark the places for the holes and make them with a drill. Use an 8mm wood drill bit;

  • the next step will be to glue the foam rubber to the plywood, taking into account that the holes for the buttons in both sheets are identical;
  • On top you need to place one layer of padding polyester. Don't forget to leave a 5cm seam allowance for each side. The fabric is placed on the padding polyester, the supply of which is 10 cm on each side. Once you complete these steps, you can turn the future headboard over and secure the fabric to the plywood using a stapler;
  • At this stage you can start preparing the buttons. You can reupholster them with textiles yourself or give them to the craftsmen. Thread a string through the eye of each button. Use laces that are at least 15 cm long and tie them in a knot. A crochet hook will be needed to thread the lace through the plywood;

  • feel the hook on the fabric side. Use a ruler to measure the distance to a nearby button and make a small hole. You can use nail scissors for this purpose. Using a hook, pick up a button with a lace and thread them through the hole;
  • the lace must be taut and properly attached with staples to the back;
  • The last step is to secure and mount the headboard to the wall. For this purpose you will need self-tapping screws.

If you are familiar with the basic intricacies of upholstering a headboard, the upholstery you make will be able to compete with the purchased version. Do-it-yourself reupholstery allows you to use your imagination and also create an exclusive option.

Master classes for beginners

Many people prefer to make their own headboard instead of buying a ready-made one. Arranging the space above the bed yourself will cost less than choosing from ready-made options. It is worth noting that your personal idea will be unique, which also has its weight when creating the interior of a bedroom.

Making a headboard is not a complicated procedure. There are ways that allow you to decorate your bed quickly and without unnecessary hassle.

To work you will need to prepare:

  • plywood sheet, the thickness of which is identical to the width of the sleeping bed. You can choose the height as you wish;
  • thick fabric. Buy textiles with a reserve. For these purposes, use padding polyester or batting. You will need 3-4 layers of material of identical size to the plywood sheet. Allow a margin of 10 cm on each edge;
  • universal glue, nails, stapler for furniture.

Step by step guide to making a headboard:

  • You will need to cut a rectangle or any shape from plywood;
  • padding polyester or batting is laid out in layers. You will need to glue each layer separately, securing the first piece to a sheet of plywood;
  • now you should wrap the seam allowance at the back of the future headboard and secure it with a stapler;
  • Now you can turn the workpiece face up. Treat the material with glue and carefully roll the fabric over the surface of the padding polyester. Avoid the appearance of folds and wrinkles - the surface should be smooth;

  • when the fabric is dry, wrap it on the back of the workpiece, stretch it and attach it to the plywood sheet with a stapler;
  • the pattern will be created using nails. You can choose any pattern. Among the simplest options is a frame that is located along all edges. To create it, you will need to nail the nails evenly and deeply, maintaining the same distance between them. This rule is present in any pattern;
  • to create a straight line, you will need to place two points at opposite ends of one side. Follow the rule that the dots are placed at the same distance from the edge;
  • Now you can drive nails into the points and stretch the thread between them. Use a pencil to place dots along the thread. Remember that the distance between the points must be the same;
  • in the indicated places you can hammer nails, which will help create a design in the future;
  • Now you can attach the headboard to the wall.

How to attach it yourself?

You can attach the headboard in several ways:

  • to the wall, which is located above the bed. You will need to screw two hinges with self-tapping screws to the back of the headboard. The element is hung on bolts;
  • to the frame. This method involves drilling a pair of holes on the sides of the outer part of the bed frame. The headboard will be screwed through these holes using screws;
  • You can also make the headboard as a free-standing structure. You can purchase ready-made wooden legs or build them yourself. The legs are screwed to the headboard, and the structure itself is installed between the bed and the wall.

How to decorate?

Not every person decides to place a bed in the center of the room. As a rule, this piece of furniture is placed near an empty wall or with its back to the window. For an Art Deco style bedroom, it is preferable to use a large mirror, because this style implies a lot of space and light. It can also be used as a headboard. The colors of this style can be colorful, but always muted. Preferred shades brown, white or metallic. The color of the furniture should contrast with the color of the walls, and one of its elements must be of a non-standard shape. In addition to the mirror, a soft rectangular or trapezoidal fabric is well suited as a headboard.

2. Headboard shapes

From the form the headboard itself depends what impression will generally produce a sleeping place. The simplest shapes are rectangular or slightly rounded at the edges. Semicircular shapes are also often used. But why not give the room a more interesting look and make the headboard, for example, in the shape shells or crowns, a large flower or a rainbow? Children will certainly like such bright headboards and will always cheer them up, even on the coldest and cloudiest day. Even small bends will look more interesting than a regular rectangle. You will need to spend a little more time giving the headboard a custom shape, but the results will be worth it. I think you have already decided on the style in which it is made, if not completely, then in its overwhelming majority, you probably already have an image of a pleasant headboard shape in your head, then it’s time get down to business.

3. Upholstered headboard

This type of headboard is most loved by many designers because it makes the room Very cozy. And if you like to spend a little time reading before bed, then it will be much more pleasant to lean your elbows on a soft, pleasant-to-the-touch headboard made by yourself. For the manufacture of you will need a few materials, but enough patience and free time.

You will need base, upholstery fabric and buttons with a loop of your choice for the front part and the most ordinary buttons with four holes for fastening on the back side, packaging foam rubber, glue, a furniture stapler, and strong threads with a needle. Base it must be strong and not necessarily beautiful - it will not be visible. Its length can be exactly equal to the width of the bed, or it can go beyond it, it depends on your preferences. You also choose the height based on your desires. Some people like to fill the entire wall behind the bed with a solid low headboard. It looks very cozy and unusual.

You can use what you have in your home as a base. For example, old door, the wall of an old cabinet, a piece of chipboard, several small doors, just wooden boards, in general, everything that would be a pity to throw away, but it’s just right here.

Filler We will use packaging foam. Why not furniture? Because it's cheaper. To achieve the required thickness, you can lay it in several layers. The piece of fabric should be 20-30 cm larger than the base along its entire perimeter. Place the base on the floor, apply glue, apply foam rubber and trim off all excess around the edges. You can attach the foam rubber using a stapler, as you wish.

We will make a very fashionable soft headboard that imitates carriage upholstery. To do this, you need to make holes in the foam rubber and the base for future buttons. To do this you need to make markings.
If you want to end up getting squares, then place the holes one below the other if diamonds, then in a checkerboard pattern. At equal distances, mark on the foam rubber the points where the future buttons will be located. Using a sharp knife, make holes at the markings in the foam rubber, then using a drill, drill small holes in the very base.
3-4 mm is enough for a needle with a strong thread to pass through easily. Before you start drilling, place something under the base to avoid making holes in the floor. Now we take the fabric, a stapler, and begin to fit the headboard. Here you can need an assistant to hold the base and hold the fabric while attaching. Fasten the edges well, do not spare the staples, but do not pull too tightly, otherwise it will be difficult to tighten the fabric with buttons and the headboard will not be as voluminous as we need. Now we take an ugly button for fastening on the back side, thread a needle and thread into it and firmly fix it, to do this you can sew it into all the holes, as if you were sewing it, so it will not slip off when tightened. We pass the needle with a button on the end of the thread from the back side and carefully feel its end on the front part. The needle should come out through the hole in the foam. Next, we thread the needle through the loop of a beautiful button, make one turn of the thread around the button and thread it through the loop again, after which we pull the thread well. The button at the back will help hold the thread, and the front button will press the fabric, creating beautiful folds. If the folds appear too shallow when tightening the thread, arrange the fabric as you like. Now cut off the needle, wrap the remaining thread around the button and tie it several times, hide the rest under the hat.

You need to start working from the first hole in the upper corner. Why us use two buttons? Because after some time, the tension will weaken a little and the pattern will become less pronounced. So as not to had to redo all over again, it will be enough to pull the back button, resuming the tension, and secure it a little lower by a piece of the freed thread with a stapler. The back of the headboard can be slightly transform, covered with any fabric or thin plywood. When the headboard is ready, you need to hang it. To do this, you can use special hinges that are attached to screwed into the wall. You can make the headboard an attached one; to do this, at the first stage, you need to attach the legs of the desired height to the base, and then simply lean it against the wall.

Important point– when you tighten the fabric on the base, form small folds with your hands on top of each hole in the first row, otherwise they may not work out, which will slightly spoil the look of the entire product.

4. Wooden headboard

Tree- This universal material that suits any style. It is very easy and pleasant to work with, and it always looks appropriate and natural. Let's make a wooden one antique effect headboard. For this you can use anything - just wooden boards, maybe you have saw cuts of various sizes, maybe an old wooden door or unnecessary ones. We will do burnt wood, you can also paint it, you can simply open it with varnish, you can paint it and then partially sand it with coarse sandpaper, you can draw a pattern or an unobtrusive design, or use a stencil... We let's tell you the theory, and you improve it to suit your version.
Let's take three boards from in good condition. Knots, small cracks or chips are not a hindrance, it’s even more textured, the main thing is that they are even and can fit snugly against the wall. First, let's tidy up the appearance of each board separately. We will need gas-burner . With its help, it is necessary to burn the surface of the wood, which will lead to its darkening. You can do it completely, or just the edges, as you like. It should look something like this:

After aging open it boards transparent varnish. Attentively read the composition varnish Not all are suitable for internal use, as they contain resins that emit harmful substances. It is better to give preference to varnish on water based, it takes longer to dry, but is completely safe. Open the boards on all sides in two layers, this will extend the life of your headboard. If you decide to decorate the wood with a pattern, then apply varnish before opening it and make sure that it does not smear. When boards dried up needs to be fastened them among themselves. For this you can use wooden planks or a metal profile. Using small ones, nail the boards to the planks or profile from the back side.
Select nails so long that their points do not go right through and come out on the front side. A wooden headboard will have a fair amount of weight, so ordinary screws may not hold it. Better suited for this anchor bolts. Before mounting, draw a straight horizontal line on the wall so that the headboard hangs perfectly straight.

5. Hanging headboard

Very unusual solution which you can easily implement. Idea is in fastening various elements to the frame located above the bed. As a frame, you can use a piece of chrome pipe or a wooden plank, or you can even handle from an old wooden mops, the main thing is that its length is enough to cover the entire width of the bed. As hanging elements you can use anything, for example, small pillows in beautiful pillowcases or one pancake pillow. For such a headboard nice to lean on. And the pillowcases are easy to remove or wash. These could be small wooden circles with pictures painted on them, metal disks with various emblems, or your collection of favorite items. More comfortable Total the pillows look on beautiful strings. To make a headboard like this we will need: pipe, chrome-plated or powder-coated, end caps in the color of the pipe 2 pieces, wall mount 2 pieces, pillowcases and small ones.
To reduce the cost of the process Instead of buying ready-made pillowcases and pillows, you can buy pieces of fabric and sew everything yourself. You can also make your own pillows. To do this, you need to buy white bed fabric and filling. In any sewing store, padding polyester or holofiber is sold by weight.

Let's imagine that we decided sew by yourself. It is necessary to make a pattern for the future pillow with a margin of a couple of centimeters on each side for the seam. Fold a piece of white fabric in half, attach the pattern, trace the contours and cut it out. Before you start scribbling, baste the workpiece, this will protect you from uneven edges and distortions during sewing. Leave one edge not sewn to the end by approximately 10 cm. Turn the finished pocket inside out and stuff it with filling through the hole left. Choose the desired volume yourself. At the end, you need to sew the pillow up to the end using a linen seam or by hand. Our pillow is ready.

Now let's sew pillowcases from selected fabric. The principle is the same, only on one side you need to add loops or ties to which the pillows will be attached to the pipe. To do this, sew not very wide strips of fabric from the inside out, folding them in half. Turn out the resulting tubes and iron them, giving them a rectangular shape.
Do pillowcase pattern, using the existing pattern for the pillow, adding another 2-3 cm around the perimeter. When you sew the pillowcase, don’t forget to insert our ribbons folded in half at one end, these will be the future loops. For comfort further use, You can sew a hidden zipper into the edge opposite the loops. This will make it easy to remove the pillows. Choose the number of pillows, their size and colors according to your own imagination. Ready pillowcases can be decorated embroidery or buttons, rhinestones, sequins or various stripes.

When all the sewing work is done, do on the wall markings, which you will be guided by when attaching the pipe. Screw one mount to the wall, thread a pipe through it, and close the edge with a plug. After this, put the cushions on the pipe and only after that screw on the second fastener and insert the edge of the pipe there. This only applies to pillows with loops. You can tie pillows with ties at any time. Enjoy the look of the work done.

It would be good if there were several types of tiles in different colors. Now get started lay out pieces onto the plywood, leaving 5 mm free along the contour. This can be a random arrangement, or a design you come up with in the form of lines, curls or flowers. When the drawing turned out and you are satisfied with the result, carefully take one piece at a time and apply glue to it. You can use this way, you have to glue all the pieces. You must there will be gaps between mosaic elements. They can fill for tiles. Once everything is dry, gently wipe your artwork with a damp cloth and then a dry cloth.
Now it's time to connect frame and mosaic. This can be done very simply using window beads. On the front side of the headboard, fill a frame of glazing beads around the perimeter of each window so that they protrude 5 mm inside the windows. This will support the plywood. On the inside, apply a little glue to the glazing beads and attach the plywood with the mosaic. Once you have glued all three pieces, lay the frame face down to let the glue dry.
