Chandelier made from cans. Original lamp from an old tin can

Readers have already become acquainted with numerous options for cozy candlesticks that you can make with your own hands from unnecessary glass jars of cream, coffee or homemade preparations. But you don’t have to stop there: within the framework of today’s fashionable eco-philosophy, you can use them to make both the usual chandeliers and lanterns, and a couple of ideas that do not require electricity at all. Well, shall we get started?

Night light without electricity

How to make an ordinary jar glow without a candle or light bulb? Maybe catch some fireflies and put them inside? - Not at all necessary! We take an ordinary 0.5 liter can and fill it with a highly carbonated drink (the authors of the master class posted on Youtube use “Mountain Dew” for these purposes). Add four teaspoons of regular baking soda, and then 12 teaspoons of 30% hydrogen peroxide. Close the jar and shake vigorously until the chemical reaction begins. The created substance is not explosive and glows very brightly in the dark. Thus, the old can, miraculously avoiding ending up in the trash, turns into a garden lantern or a romantic night light.

It must be admitted that not everyone can achieve the trick described above: there is an opinion that a lot depends on the composition of the sparkling water used (even the same brand of product is produced in our country using different recipes and technologies than in America or Europe). In case of failure, there is another simple recipe with which you can get glowing water at home. True, it requires a larger number of components: 20 ml of plain water, a little washing powder, 10 ml of hydrogen peroxide (3%), 5 ml of luminol solution (3%), several crystals of potassium permanganate and, of course, unnecessary glass containers.

Can chandelier

Architecture and design studio "Aidia Studio" presented its large-scale installation called "Milkywave" at the annual exhibition "Beijing Design Week" in Kitwe. This unusual art piece consists of 1,664 yogurt bottles, which are standard containers in any Beijing neighborhood and litter the city's streets along with many other discarded bottles and cans. Each of them is equipped with a light bulb and placed on different levels of a huge pendant lamp.

At home, you can make something smaller and simpler - but no less original. This is a good way to highlight your green thinking and encourage guests to reuse materials. It would seem like just household waste - but it looks luxurious!

Making a chandelier from glass jars is quite simple, but only jars with screw-on lids are suitable for this purpose. It will be necessary to drill holes for the wire in the lids and place the required number of cans in accordance with the chosen composition (bouquet, circle, spiral, etc.)

Banks can also be decorated in the same way as we talked about in the first part of the master class: paint them with stained glass paints or acrylics, apply patterns, or make individual inscriptions and patterns using a glue gun. Finally, you can pour colored water into the bottom of each jar (about a third of its volume), as suggested by Italian designer Tommaso Guerra, and thus obtain the desired shade of light. Beautiful, functional and even shocking - but why not?

Oil lamp and matches container

You can even make oil lamps from glass jars (for emergency situations). Fill two-thirds of the jar (you can also take a bottle) with kerosene and close the lid. We place the rope inside and leave it for an hour until it is saturated with flammable liquid. Then we make a hole in the lid and pass a rope through it and, if necessary, light it. Speaking of matches: they can also be stored in a small jar by covering the outer surface of the lid with grater paper.

Garland in a jar

The New Year is approaching - which means that soon we will be extracting multi-colored garlands from the depths of the mezzanine. As it turned out, they look good in company with glass jars. You can place the entire wire inside and place such a lamp near the outlet. And to get the effect as in the photo you will also need a strong rope or cord that will serve as a support for the entire structure. Don't forget about additional decor!

You can make a lighting fixture for your home or garden from anything. Yes, even from the same glass jars. The trend of recycling has become very popular in the world, so it is not surprising that today you can find a lot of master classes on making lamps from glass jars.

This article will help you not only choose the type of lamp, but also make it correctly from scrap materials with your own hands.

Where it will come in handy

Many people mistakenly believe that a lamp made from cans is only suitable for a country house. But this is a misconception, since if executed correctly, such a lighting device will look beautiful in any interior of an apartment or private house.
Note! Lamps made from glass jars can be styled in any style known today.
As decoration you can use:

  • hand painted;
  • multi-colored pieces of glass;
  • various ropes and appliqués;
  • colored paper;
  • drawings.

Decor option

Using such a simple material as glass and products made from it, you will get unusual Moroccan night lights and other lighting options. At the same time, by making them yourself, you will save significantly, without buying ready-made models in stores.

What you might need

To make a lighting device with your own hands, you will need the following materials:

  • glass jars;
  • candle, portable flashlight or parts of an old lamp (socket and base);
  • dye;
  • wire;
  • transparent silicone glue;
  • decorative materials (ribbons, ropes, appliqués, etc.).

Note! When choosing decorative elements, remember that they must be combined with the interior of the room in which the homemade lamp will be placed.

The list of necessary tools includes a drill with a set of drills for working with glass, scissors, and brushes of different sizes.

What you can get

A lamp made from a can can have a wide variety of designs and appearance. The following product options can be made from this material:

  • candlesticks;
  • tabletop instruments;
  • shades for chandeliers.

Let's look at each option in more detail.

Note! The methods for making lighting fixtures described below are applicable to all glass products.

Option number 1. Candlesticks
The simplest and easiest thing to do will be making candlesticks. Here you can use both darkened and transparent small jars. If necessary, you can repaint them with your own hands in the desired color.
To make a candlestick, you need to do the following manipulations:

  • apply a design to a glass product. To give it volume, simply blend the paint;
  • then pour paint inside the jar and also blend it;
  • The neck can be additionally wrapped with strong rope and thus form the basis for attaching the candlestick to the wall or ceiling. Instead of rope, you can use wire to install the candlestick;
  • Add some sand and water to the bottom. This will protect the glass from heating and cracking;
  • Place a lit candle inside.

Ready candlestick

Option No. 2. Tabletop device
Here larger cans (1, 2 and 3 liters) should be used for production. To make such a lamp, you will additionally need glass balls and pieces of glass of different colors.
Everything is done with your own hands as follows:

  • wash and dry the jar;
  • We are deciding on the method of external decoration with glass. You can paste them over the entire glass surface in a chaotic order, or you can lay out a specific pattern (ornament);
  • Next, we coat the outer surface with glue and begin laying out the pieces of glass. Try not to make the joints between the pieces of glass large. They should be almost invisible;

Note! Use fast-setting glue so you don't have to wait too long for the glass to attach to the surface of the jar.

Decoration

  • we wait for all the pieces of glass to stick properly;
  • take a beautiful ribbon and tie it around the neck. This will give the product a festive look;
  • pour sand and water inside the jar and place lighted candles on top. It is better to use small and flat candles. They can be replaced with a small portable flashlight.

Ready product

Such a device is suitable for lighting a picnic in the evening near the house or just gatherings in a gazebo. In addition, it will fit perfectly into the romantic atmosphere of a dinner at home.

Complex option

The most difficult thing to do will be to form a chandelier from glass jars. The difficulty here is that it will be necessary to drill holes in the bottom of the glass product to insert a socket with a light bulb. Let's look at an example of manufacturing without drilling, which will greatly simplify our task.
Such a lighting fixture will be an excellent addition to a country kitchen, living room and other rooms, decorated in Provence and Country styles.
The lamp can be made according to the following scheme:

  • We measure the wire to the length we need. The loops will take approximately 7-10 cm;
  • make two small loops of 1-1.5 cm;
  • We attach the wire to the neck. The first lampshade is ready.

We repeat a similar procedure for all other lampshades. After this, we decorate the resulting lampshades using paint, various applications and other decorative materials.

Finished chandelier

Inside such lampshades you can place a light bulb on a wire. If you need to drill holes for a light bulb, we make it in the lid (it’s easier this way). Here you can cut a hole with ordinary scissors. We thread the base with the light bulb into the hole we made and secure it with wire or rope. Carefully decorate the place of fixation.
Using these simple instructions, you can make a lamp of any type, shape and size from a glass jar. Be original in decorating and you will get a unique and unique lighting fixture in your home.

Materials

The most suitable and accessible materials are paper and textile. They are easy to transform, each of us is familiar with them and can be found in everyone. home. Wonderful lamps are also obtained from threads or yarn. Naturally, glass can also be used for lampshades. At home, these are ordinary or unusual, with an interesting shape, jars or bottles. Particularly daring projects include plastic containers, coffee packaging, and plastic children's toys.

In addition, do not discard options such as rattan, bamboo and rubber. Both raw materials and a finished product can serve as the basis for a future product. For example, designers have become adept at creating delightful lampshades from beads, globes, parts of sets, mirror shards and even crumpled sheets of music! You just have to take a closer look at the objects around you...

Understanding how difficult it is to move from thought to action, especially to see an exquisite accessory in an ordinary jar, we have prepared several master classes for you. By following the step-by-step instructions, you can easily make some sweet hand-made new things for any room in the house.

Ideas and their implementation

Since we have already mentioned the materials suitable for making lampshades and lampshades, let’s start with paper.

Lamp with butterflies

For work we will need:

  • white thin cardboard
  • thin twine or fishing line
  • glue gun
  • wire for frame
  • utility knife or scissors
  • round pliers

Advice! Before you start work, decide on the dimensions of the finished lampshade. In our example, the diameter is 30 cm, which means we need a piece of cardboard 90 cm long.

  1. We make a frame. Cut a piece of wire 96-98 cm long. Roll the wire into a circle with a diameter of 30 cm and secure the ends with pliers.
  2. We cut 3 hanging elements from twine or fishing line. We measure the length of the pieces based on the height at which you plan to hang the lamp. We tie them to the wire in three places, evenly distributing the load.
  3. Draw butterflies of different sizes on cardboard and cut them out.
  4. We fold the cardboard, glue the joint with a strip of thick paper or staple it with a stapler.
  5. We fix the upper part on the wire. For this you can use both glue and thin wire.
  6. The places of joints and cuts can be decorated with butterflies remaining after cutting.
    Look what an elegant lamp we have created. It will fit perfectly into both a children's room and a bedroom. You will see a special chic when you turn on the lamp and butterflies flutter along the walls.

Advice! Instead of butterflies, you can cut out snowflakes, stars or flowers. Decide for yourself what you like best.

60s style

If you ask our grandmothers, they will certainly remember floor lamps with lampshades in the form of an inverted bucket, tied with colored threads. We can do exactly the same thing with our own hands.

We will need:

  • frame for lampshade – 2 pcs.
  • decorative braid (3 colors, choose a combination to your liking)
  • scissors
  • crochet hook

Let's start production.

  • We tie the first braid to the lower ring of the lampshade, leaving a tail of at least 5 cm.
  • We pull it onto the top ring from the outside, throw it over it and pull it through the inside of the bottom ring. We alternate actions until the next sector of the frame begins.
  • We fasten the first braid and take a braid of a different color to work. We knit it to the next sector, not forgetting to leave a tail on the first knot.
  • We do the same with the third sector, filling it with the remaining braid.
  • We stretch the tails along the bottom of the lampshade using a crochet hook.

Now our lampshade from the distant 60s is ready, all that remains is to insert the socket and assemble the chandelier in any order.

Fringed braid

Another original idea for a DIY lampshade also involves braid, but not a single layer, but with fringe. What do we need for this?

Prepare:

  1. two metal hoops or an embroidery hoop
  2. fringed braid
  3. fishing line
  4. acrylic paint, the same color as the braid
  5. glue gun
  6. scissors

Advice! Fringed braid can be purchased in stores that sell decor for curtains and furniture.

  1. We paint the hoops or hoops with acrylic paint. If they are already covered with varnish or other paint, it is better to sand and clean them.
  2. We wait until the paint is completely dry and make three marks on each ring of the lampshade, placing them at an equal distance from each other.
  3. I cut three identical pieces of fishing line.
  4. We tie them to the smaller ring of the lampshade, leaving the upper ends with a margin so that we can then tie them to the lamp cord.
  5. We measure the length of the fringe, subtract 2 cm from it, and tie the fishing line to the second ring using the resulting length. This way we can get a cascade.
  6. Heat the glue gun and carefully glue the braid along the bottom ring.
  7. We do the same with the upper ring, pulling it out from the lower one.

Advice! Please note that the hot glue may melt the line, so be careful not to apply it directly to the line. Drop glue onto the paper, let it cool a little, and then apply it to the fishing line.

Glass jars are good not only for preserving homemade products: with their help you can decorate your apartment or cottage - just a little imagination is enough! Using your imagination, you can find more than one design solution for unnecessary glass containers - so don’t rush to get rid of it.

Do you like to spend weekends at the dacha or are you planning an outdoor holiday? Simple candle holders made from small glass jars hung along the branches will look great in the garden in the evening. Larger and heavier jars can also be placed in the grass - and instead of miniature “tablets”, use classic candles (to give them stability, just pour sand or small pebbles into the jar). At night and during rain, you can cover your homemade lanterns with regular lids to prevent water from getting into them.

But you can take a more creative path and “dress up” the glass containers with something. One of the easiest options is to tightly wrap the jars with brightly colored yarn and tie the ends. The threads can also be glued (for this it is recommended to use aerosol glue). Don't forget to remove the labels first and make sure the glass is clean and dry!

Maybe you still have once-fashionable crocheted patterned napkins? If there are no such people on the farm, do not be upset: in any city there are people who give away such goods for free or are ready to give them up for a symbolic price. Having obtained napkins and several glass jars (preferably different sizes), in a matter of moments we will create a luxurious collection of candlesticks for the interior of a bedroom or living room. We glue the napkin evenly, without wrinkles.

If you want to achieve a touch of sophistication, you can wrap leftover lace from a craft box around the jar or tear it off from an old nightgown that you were planning to use for household needs a long time ago. By the way, beads and buttons are also welcome.

Try literally coloring your candlesticks to suit your mood. Pour acrylic paint of the desired color (about 5 cm layer) onto the bottom of the glass jar, and then slowly turn it. This way the paint will spread evenly over the entire inside of the can, and on the outside we will get a pleasant glossy effect.

You can also paint the jars with spray paint. A curious effect can be achieved if you paint the outside of the jar, first wrapping it tightly with twine or gluing simple paper patterns (you can even use everyone’s favorite snowflakes for these purposes). The main thing for working with spray paint is to find a well-ventilated room or get out onto the balcony. When the paint dries, simply cut the threads.

What about stained glass candlesticks? To create such a masterpiece we will need a glass jar, stained glass paints and an outline. Nothing complicated: we draw a drawing with an outline (you can use glitter), paint it with stained glass paints and let it dry. Place a candle inside, light it - and enjoy the result!

If you are not very comfortable with paints, you can go the other way - paste over unnecessary glass jars with glass drops or emerald glass cullet collected on the beach, which the sea waves managed to polish. We firmly press the small parts to the surface of the jar and do not leave air bubbles under them. Excess glue (“liquid nails”) should be immediately removed with a cotton swab before it dries, and then the joints should be filled with tile grout. After a quarter of an hour, thoroughly wipe the candlestick with a damp sponge and use it for its intended purpose.

In preparation for the winter holidays, thickly coat the jar with PVA glue and roll it in salt to create a colorful “snowy” decor. If you want to give your candlesticks a tint, mix salt with a small amount of dry food or cosmetic coloring. In addition, instead of salt, you can use beads, glitter or broken Christmas tree decorations. Apply glue to the top edges of the jar and sprinkle salt on top. Let it dry for a few hours, and then use a clean, dry brush to brush off any loose particles. Coat the jar with three coats of spray varnish (with a 20-minute break between coats). The candlestick is ready!
