Portal type milling machines. Do-it-yourself large portal CNC milling machine

Portal milling machines from the company "IRLEN-ENGINEERING" are modern high-precision equipment with numerical control, designed for metalworking of medium and large parts mounted on a long movable table, using a wide range of end tools. The key operations that are performed on this type of equipment include:

  • Milling of planes and ledges.
  • Drilling, boring holes.
  • Formation of grooves of complex configuration.
  • Finishing required areas.

The use of angular heads in portal milling machines during machining allows the working tool to be fed at an angle to the axis, which minimizes the need to rearrange parts. A movable long table also allows you to minimize equipment downtime and process products of different configurations almost in a single cycle.

Features of portal CNC milling machines

The key features of this equipment include high precision and speed of machining metal products in a fully automatic cycle. Significant spindle rotation speed, quick tool replacement, which requires a pause of no more than 13 seconds, as well as the ability to install several workpieces on the table make this equipment effective for serial and small-scale production.

In addition, the presented portal CNC milling machines are characterized by the following features:

  • Possibility of installing a chain tool magazine for 40, 60 or 120 positions.
  • Tool wear monitoring system.
  • A system for measuring the part before and after processing.
  • An optical system for positioning the moving parts of the machine relative to each other.
  • Coolant supply system to the working area.

They have a single-column (cantilever) frame structure, which imposes restrictions on the weight and size of the processed parts (as a rule, for single-column milling machines we are talking about the maximum permissible length of a metal part of 2-3 meters and a weight of 2-3 tons). To mill parts several meters in size and weighing several tons, a portal frame design of the milling machine is used.

Structurally, the portal consists of two columns on which the edges of a horizontal beam are attached; a spindle head with a vertical spindle moves along the guides of this beam (also called “transverse”), which, depending on the specific design of the milling machine, may have, in addition to vertical travel, the ability to rotate and /or bend in one or two vertical planes. To speed up the processing process, the number of spindles can differ from 1, for example, it can be equal to 3, when both side columns of a portal milling machine also have one spindle (see the figure on the right).

If “classical” milling machines have movements in all 3 Cartesian coordinates(X, Y, Z) occur solely due to the movements of the working table, then on portal milling machines the table with a multi-ton workpiece fixed on it can only move in the longitudinal direction (X axis). In some cases (for particularly massive workpieces), designers choose an option with a fixed work table fixed to the foundation, and movement along the X axis of such a milling machine occurs due to a portal that is movable relative to the ground (and the table). The diagram of the gantry milling machine axes on the right shows a variant with a movable portal; it should also be noted that multi-axis machines are necessarily controlled by CNC systems.

Regardless of whether the portal of a milling machine or its work table is movable, the large weight and volume of processing parts require operation of the main spindle in high load mode, and movements along all axes of the portal milling machine involve great efforts to overcome the forces of friction and deformation. In this regard, ensuring high precision, as well as speeds of working and idle feeds during the operation of portal milling machines, presents a number of engineering problems, the solution of which is various innovations to ensure increased structural rigidity, minimize friction, wear of parts, forced cooling of individual machine modules, etc. Therefore, despite their relative external simplicity, portal-type milling machines are sometimes quite complex engineering complexes.

On the Russian-language Internet, portal milling machines also have the names “Longitudinal milling machines”; abroad they are called “gantry” or “heavy duty” milling machines.

Often there is a need for milling large-sized workpieces (for example, body parts of machines and units). Such workpieces, in addition to their large size, also have a large mass, which makes their processing difficult. Gantry milling machining centers are best suited for such work. Portal milling machining centers are available in versions with a movable table and with movable columns. The use of a machine design with movable columns makes it possible to process larger workpieces at smaller sizes processing center.

Gantry milling machining centers with movable columns are used for processing long and large-sized workpieces. The traditional layout of such machines includes a fixed table and a longitudinally movable portal carrying a traverse with a transversely and vertically movable spindle head. Thus, the movement of the tool along the X axis is carried out due to the movement of the portal along the work table, the movement of the tool along the Y axis is carried out due to the movement of the traverse with the spindle along the portal in the horizontal plane, the movement of the tool along the Z axis is carried out due to the movement of the spindle along its vertical axis.

The following types of work are performed on portal milling processing centers: milling, boring, countersinking, drilling, cutting internal and external threads, trimming ends. To perform all these types of work without readjusting the machine, it is usually equipped with a large magazine of belt-type tools. The tool is changed, as a rule, by a rotating traverse, which reduces the tool change time and, ultimately, reduces the processing cycle.

The DEG Group of Companies supplies the Russian and CIS markets with high-precision portal milling machining centers from DMC (Korea), carries out commissioning and post-warranty service of equipment.

Portal CNC milling A machine is a high-tech equipment designed to perform tasks such as drilling, relief and plane milling, and engraving. To do this, you need to create a drawing in a special editor, load it into the control module of the machine, after which the machine itself will perform all the necessary actions. You can process wood, metal, plastic, stone and some other materials.

Advantages of CNC machines

Gantry CNC machines are capable of quickly performing high-precision milling work, and they do not require participation more work force. One operator can service several machines simultaneously. Its task is usually to secure (remove) the workpiece and launch the control program.

The use of a CNC milling portal machine in production can significantly reduce the time spent on the product manufacturing cycle in comparison with the same process using conventional equipment that requires the involvement of qualified personnel.

Purchasing a milling machine with numerical control will cost an enterprise less than purchasing several conventional machines.

The speed of production and its quality will be higher. It will be possible to produce a wider range of products and save on the salaries of qualified personnel, which will allow you to recoup the funds spent on equipment in a short time.

Types and scope of application

Portal CNC milling machines differ in functionality and scope of use. Some devices are designed to perform a wide range of tasks. For example, on engraving and milling portal machines it is possible to produce products from various types of materials: from hard alloys to foam plastic. This can be 2D or 3D processing, with varying degrees of accuracy and detail. At the same time, milling machines can be processed exclusively.

Portal CNC machines of industrial type

This is the most expensive and often large-sized equipment, which is largely compensated by its reliability and functionality. Operation in industrial conditions places a number of demands on CNC machines. Trouble-free operation failure over a long period of time, under conditions of high loads, accuracy, ability to process large parts. In addition, such devices are equipped with all possible equipment, such as vacuum tables, water cooling systems for the spindle and tool changing. The control of industrial CNC equipment is implemented in the form of separate consoles, on which advanced software is usually installed.

CNC machines for small businesses

This is the next one industrial look portal machines with numerical control, which does not always mean their lower functionality or productivity relative to their older brothers. They are made according to the same principles and often with the same components.

The differences may be primarily in size and equipment. The package includes the essentials; there can be no talk of any carousel systems for changing cutting tools, unless, of course, the device was purchased for tasks requiring such a function. The operation of the device is often controlled by a computer via an LTP port or using adapters connected to USB or LAN.

Medium CNC routers are popular in small businesses, among individual entrepreneurs and in private use. They are used for milling wood and MDF in carpentry or furniture production, making monuments (stone engraving), advertising products, and seals. The purchase of large, expensive CNC units for such needs is not justified and will bring losses rather than profits.

Multi-axis CNC machines

A CNC router must have at least three axes: two for positioning on the plane and one for moving the spindle with the cutting tool in the vertical direction. This functionality allows the machine to process the part in the so-called 2.5D format. This implies a relief elaboration of the plane, without milling the internal sections of the part.

On a gantry milling machine, the fourth axis is usually a lathe chuck mounted to the surface of the work table. The workpiece is clamped into it, and processing occurs by rotating the part and moving the spindle along it. This method is often used in the manufacture of balusters for stairs. However, it is a mistake to consider the lathe chuck as the fourth axis, because in most cases it is connected to the controller, which previously controlled one of the plane axes (most often X). The rotation of the chuck simulates movement along this axis.

Milling processing of full-fledged 3D objects is possible if the CNC has 5 axes. Such devices are used for making models, decorative models, and sculptures.

There are CNC milling machines with several (2 or more) spindles. Such solutions help speed up the production of identical parts.

Homemade equipment

The design and drawings for such devices are made independently. As a rule, they try to make the design according to the simplest possible scheme. In production, improvised means are used (for example, stepper motors from DVD players). Some components can be made to order, some can be purchased online.

Design features

The portal design of CNC machines implies the presence of a U-shaped portal. Its movement along the working plane ensures processing of the part along the Y axis. Along the X axis, the part is processed by moving the spindle along the portal beam.

CNC machines consist of the following elements:

  • Bed. Located under the portal, there is a desktop on it, as well as guides along which the U-shaped structure moves.
  • Portal. Moves over the bed. It houses the working units and mechanisms of the CNC machine;
  • Stepper motors (servo motors). They set in motion mechanisms that ensure movement of the processing tool along a given axis;
  • Guides. Usually rail or pipe type. Provide precise linear movement of the moving parts of the machine in a given direction;
  • Movement mechanisms. There are two types: ball screw or rack and pinion set. The rotation of stepper motors through these mechanisms is converted into the movement of machine components.
  • . Provides rotation of the cutting tool.
  • Control system. For full numerical control of the machine , a separate rack with specially developed software is required. Budget machines can be controlled from a regular PC.
